Reporter Eric Stoltz noses into the life of Jennifer Connelly after a murder-suicide
17 May 2016 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

The detailed plot of "The Heart of Justice" (1992) may be found in the review (with spoilers) of critic John Grant on his "Noirish" blog. This movie is a neo-noir. It has a femme fatale in the person of Jennifer Connelly. As in "The Hot Spot" (1990), her part is solid and she is memorable in the part due to her smoldering soft-spoken allure that involves alternately rejecting and encouraging advances. Eric Stoltz is an unlikeable and self-centered protagonist reporter who is seeking to discover why Connelly's brother (Dermot Mulroney) assassinated novelist Dennis Hopper and then committed suicide. Hopper's role is brief. A more than able supporting cast includes William H. Macy, Vincent Price, Harris Yulin and Bradford Dillman.

The IMDb rating of 5.9 is about right, in my opinion, suggesting an average quality movie. Its strong acting is countered by a rather slow-moving and predictable story. The aspects of the story that are supposed to lend mystery to it, causing Stoltz to go on his drawn out investigation, seem almost entirely obvious at the outset. Some clever bits are done with style during his investigation and the characters are fleshed out, but there is really very little mystery to it. Eventually some actions occur that are out of character and this too undermines the story. To like this story a lot, one must relish the journey or development, while knowing or strongly suspecting where it's going, not that there is not some surprise along the way. I myself was annoyed that Stoltz didn't put 2 and 2 together sooner, especially when he was told the plot of Hopper's latest novel.
