Matthew Modine as a young man trying to get his act together
24 February 2013 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"Equinox" is a disguised fantasy that simulates the real. None of the characters come across as real. Each one is quirky. The whole picture takes place in an unknown time and in a future where the city is dystopic, at least in parts. The story is stitched together and gimmicky. It's hard to know what to make of the result, but to me it has a subdued Alice in Wonderland quality. Mostly it feels like a Superman movie. It has a cartoonish quality about it.

The story definitely takes its time getting going. Modine works in a garage with his father (M. Emmet Walsh), who adopted him but never told him. Unknown to both is that he has a twin who is a gangster. At first the story cuts back and forth between these two, and it seems as if Modine is daydreaming like Walter Mitty. Eventually, we find that the two are separate men. The gangster Modine is quite unlike the usual screen gangster, and it's hard to imagine how he ever could have become a gangster. The script uses the gimmick of a journalist (Tyra Ferell) who has stolen a letter from a dead old lady that leads her into investigating a trust fund set up long ago for the twins. This sounds like the kind of story you might concoct as a bedtime story, but would you put it on the screen? It's fine to have characters that have weaknesses. Can a movie sustain interest in which the main character is as naive, conflicted, and indecisive as is Modine's mechanic? I felt I was watching some sort of curiosity as his quirks and those of the other characters surfaced. It didn't seem either that the main actions they took related to how they were shown as people. Most of them seemed to lack sense.

This movie is on the strange side. This doesn't make it a bad movie. I rate it below par because whatever the concept aimed at was, I don't think it was achieved artistically, and that's because the characters and their actions didn't come across as realistic.
