Trivia

First choices to play the King and Queen of Spain were Frankie Howerd and Joan Sims. Second choices were Bernard Bresslaw and Barbara Windsor. All four were unable, or unwilling, to appear (Windsor later said the script was 'crap'), as was another original surviving "Carry On..." regular, Kenneth Connor. See more »

Columbus wants to find gold but there's no gold in this stinker.
12 February 2011 | by (Edinburgh.) – See all my reviews

Well, what can I say? Where to begin? I remember the reviews describing this movie as a stinker back when it was released almost 20 years ago and I'm pretty sure that I agreed with those reviews when I saw it way back then but now, after seeing every other Carry On movie in the series, it just seems even worse.

Gerald Thomas directs once again and that's one plus point. Not that his direction is any good, god rest his soul, but it's nice to see the man who helmed the first picture in the series being there right to the very end. The fact that the end should have been about three or four movies prior to this one is a different matter altogether.

Jim Dale is Columbus, embarking on a journey that I really can't even be bothered to explain, and the rest of the cast is filled out by more modern UK comedy faces and a couple of the old guard (Jack Douglas is here, as is Bernard Cribbins and Jon Pertwee, and June Whitfield pops up for a couple of scenes alongside Leslie Phillips). We have Keith Allen, Alexei Sayle, Rik Mayall and Nigel Planer in one scene, Julian Clary, Richard Wilson, Maureen Lipman and Sara Crowe. Larry Miller and Charles Fleischer also pop up, doing quite well with what poor material they're given.

The whole thing feels a bit like listening to your uncle's well-worn seasonal gags every Christmas. There's that familiarity and you have that longing to like what's about to be delivered to you but the end result is so poor and so unoriginal that the best you can do is to make your groan sound like a good-humoured one. A number of gags are lifted from earlier, better Carry On movies (while it's nice to see the earlier films references it just adds to the feeling of this movie being one big stinker when the older gags don't play as well here as they did elsewhere) and the performances all border on the irritating.

In fact, it's just sad to watch the old favourites go through the motions and my heart went out to the wonderful Jim Dale, who just looked a bit tired and unenthusiastic throughout.

The fact that the whole thing seems to have been filmed on a limited number of sets and the delivery of the dialogue is akin to something you could hear from any school play also doesn't help to endear this one to either fans of the series or newcomers expecting some comedy emulating a hit style from yesteryear.
