'Candyman': THR's 1992 Review

'Candyman': THR's 1992 Review
On Oct. 16, 1992, Bernard Rose's Candyman hit theaters. Based on a Clive Barker short story, the film centered on a Chicago grad student investigating an urban legend about a hook-handed killer who could be summoned by saying his name five times in the mirror. THR's original review is below.

So long, Freddy. Take a hike, Jason. Hasta la vista, Chucky. There’s a new bogeyman in town and he makes all other pretenders to the terror throne look like a bunch of cuddly Disney characters by comparison. He’s called the Candyman, but bears absolutely no relation to the guy...

#FromJennifer Shoots for Internet Fame and Finds Only Self-destruction: A Film Review

*full disclosure: a screener of this film was provided by Sector 5 Films. Director: Frank Merle. Writers: James Cullen Bressack and Frank Merle. Cast: Tony Todd, Derek Mears, Aaron Abrams, Meghan Deanna Smith and Danielle Taddei. #FromJennifer is the third film in the series. This second sequel was preceded by To Jennifer (2013) and 2 Jennifer (2016). This latest production is from director Frank Merle and writer James Cullen Bressack. And, the series comes to a close with a tale of revenge and internet fame. Mostly comedic, a couple of horror veterans, Tony Todd (Candyman, 1992) and Derek Mears (Hatchet III, 2013) anchor the film. But, there are few scary moments here and more laughs. Meanwhile, Jennifer is her own hero and villain, sabotaging her path to success. The third act goes off the deep end. Still, #FromJennifer is an entertaining time, that goes by quite fast, even considering its short seventy-five minute runtime. The story begins with our damaged hero.

Video: 5 Best Teenage Slasher Movies

Everyone loves a good slasher movie. It’s got everything a movie lover wants- dumb teenagers with hormones and serial killers who are bent on finding them. Plus, lots and lots of bad decisions. It’s like a game of cat and mouse only most of the time the mouse loses. With that in mind, we would like to share with you five of the best slasher movies around.

5. I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)

While this movie didn’t get many favorable reviews, Jim Gillespie’s I Know What You Did Last Summer has all the elements of a slasher film. Clueless teenagers and a relentless killer. Loosely adapted from a Lois Duncan novel, Kevin Williamson’s script flips the hit and run incident from a small boy to a fishermen. There was a lot of things that worked in this movie-particularly the attractive cast and the inspiration

Graphic Nature: Jeremy from Silver Ferox on the Artwork for One Way Static’s Vinyl Soundtracks for the Candyman Films

  • DailyDead
Based upon a frightening fable penned by Clive Barker, the Candyman film series not only delivered a refreshing, sophisticated story—it also gave the horror genre a tragic and terrifying new boogeyman to fear in Tony Todd’s sinister portrayal of the title role. As the composer for both the original and follow-up film, Philip Glass’s cold soundscapes helped bloom the dark urban dystopia that resonated on the screen, complete with one of the most iconic movie themes of modern cinema. Summoning up Jeremy from Silver Ferox to create the hazy kodak visuals, One Way Static’s vinyl release of both Candyman and Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh captures and crystallizes the foreboding dread both sonically and visually in a stunning and sugary release.

Reflecting upon the task of visually complementing Glass’ sharp, splintered score, Jeremy explains, “I’ve admired Glass’ music ever since I saw/heard Koyaanisqatsi about 25 years ago.
