Review: SX_TAPE

15 July 2014 5:12 PM, PDT | iconsoffright.com | See recent Icons of Fright news »

Most gripes falling within the found footage sub-genre of horror tend to be focusing on unlikable characters, the insisting of filming Everything at all times, and the slow burn of waiting for something to happen. While films like Cloverfield, V/H/S/2 and The Den did a great job of breaking those trends, most found footage films, unfortunately, just end up being the same frustrating, completely tired group of cliches. Though the opportunity to take a good look at peoples’ obsession with sex tapes through horror lenses presented itself with Bernard Rose(Candyman)’s SX_TAPE, unfortunately, it fails at that, along with most opportunities it takes on.

Taking a young (and Very horny) couple, an artist and her always filming boyfriend, SX_TAPE wastes no time in shoving their wanting to get it on anywhere and everywhere right in viewers’ faces, spending the whole first quarter of the film focusing on that, »

Candyman and the Monsters of Urban Legends

6 June 2014 2:06 PM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

On May 31, two twelve-year-olds in Wisconsin allegedly stabbed a friend 19 times in honour of the mythic Slender Man. Fortunately, the victim survived. We disseminate most urban legends and false news stories via the internet now, and the Slender Man was one of the first major urban legends created as an internet meme, its success often credited to the chaotic nature of the internet.

This latest tragedy is something of a horrific role-reversal. Monsters, serial killers and maniacs in film and literature are often inspired by the real thing. A truly horrific incident based on fiction is another matter. For no matter what sick, depraved Awful one can create, it doesn’t hold a candle to reality.

Bernard Rose’s Candyman both exploits and takes such matters into account. The film follows Helen Lyle (Virgina Madsen) a graduate student at the University of Chicago in the then-fictional academic field of Folklore. »

[Comic Execution] 5/30 – ‘Nightbreed’, ‘Trees’, ‘Doctor Spektor’

30 May 2014 12:30 PM, PDT | Destroy the Brain | See recent Destroy the Brain news »

Can We Please Just Get A Comic Book Adaptation Of ‘Jericho’ Already?

And no, I’m not talking about that one TV show. I think they already did a comic of that and that got cancelled too.

No, I’m referring to the video game ‘Jericho,’ written by Cliver Barker. It is seriously gut-wrenching stuff. I mean, it wasn’t a great game. But it would make a hell of a comic book.

Nightbreed #1

Writer: Marc Andreyko

Artist: Piotr Kowalski

Publisher: Boom! Studios

Price: $4 (Digital)

I’m the worst Cliver Barker fan in existence. I’ve literally only read one book by him (‘The Inhuman Condition’ aka ‘Books of Blood Volume IV’) and I’ve seen a grand sum of One movie based on his works: ‘Midnight Meat Train’ (‘Rawhead Rex’ doesn’t count). And yes, this means I’ve never seen ‘Candyman,’ though I’ve listened to the »

SX_Tape Review

26 May 2014 9:46 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Just as quickly as Afflicted redefined the “found footage” horror subgenre, SX_Tape came along and proved there are still Plenty of opportunities for filmmakers to exploit first-person horror normalities. One day there’s a bright hope, the next there’s a disgusting reminder that for every original idea, someone else will rehash the past few years of duds for their own ill-conceived shitfest. I want to remain positive, happily accepting an advancement in “found footage” horror – but it takes a certain type of awful to make me hate a movie in which our lead, possessed character jumps up and down screaming “Let Me Suck Your Dick!” To think some inexperienced filmmaker could just waltz into stardom with such a – wait, this was directed by Bernard Rose of Candyman fame? Oh boy, where’s Tony Todd when you need him?

When has a sex tape ever gone wrong, am I right? »

Review: SX_Tape is just Plain Bad, Bad, Bad

16 May 2014 7:01 AM, PDT | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

A long, long time ago, in the early-'90s, a cult classic horror movie caught everyone off guard and ended up making Tony Todd a horror staple. Candyman, directed by Bernard Rose and based off a Clive Barker short story, was a critical and financial success. And then...Bernard Rose didn’t really do too much. He made a couple of historical films, a gothic horror-esque movie, but the man who was praised for his work with this now classic genre film stayed away from the genre. Now, he’s back with SX_Tape.

‘Game Of Thrones’ Star For Clive Barker Adaptation

7 May 2014 8:30 AM, PDT | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Once known for her roles in period drama Lena Headey has spent most of the last decade re-inventing herself with roles in Dredd and 300 distancing herself from her more mousey roles. Best know for her turn as the wonderfully wicked Cersei Lannister in HBO smash Game Of Thrones, the actress has now set her sights on some really dark material having agreed to star in a new film based on a Clive Barker story.

Everyone knows, or at least should know, the author and occasional film directors name, especially those that move in the horror circles. Barker is the mind responsible for creating the source material behind iconic horror Hellraiser with other credits including Candyman and The Midnight Meat Train. His next short story to be given the movie transformation is Jacqueline Ess, which is taken from Barker’s anthology Books of Blood.
