‘Empire’: So Who’s the Daddy?

12 March 2015 5:30 AM, PDT | | See recent news »

- Michael Arceneaux

On last night’s Empire, boos ran away, baby mamas came back, and for a minute there, I was wondering if Madea was going to pop up out of nowhere to tell Lucious about her mixtape on DatPiff. It was entertaining for sure, but a little crazy even by this show’s standards. Gather ‘round, though, beloveds, we must talk this out.

1. Why didn’t Cookie know anything about bipolar disorder?

Considering Cookie’s spent a considerable amount of time in prison, she missed a lot of important things: Destiny’s Child; Destiny’s Child’s breakup; Destiny’s Child second breakup; Beyoncé proving she is literally destiny’s child as a solo act; Destiny’s Child getting back together; everyone in Destiny’s Child going back solo. She also seemed to miss that episode of Oprah in which actress Jenifer Lewis aka everyone’s Black mama »

Film composer Alan Silvestri — best known for his work with director Robert Zemeckis on such films as “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” and “Forrest Gump” and the “Back to the Future” trilogy — will be the central honoree at the 15th Annual World Soundtrack Awards, which will close the 42nd edition of Film Fest Gent on Oct. 24 in Belgium.

As is custom, the work of Silvestri — following in the footsteps of previous Wsa honorees Angelo Badalamenti, John Barry and Cliff Martinez — will be performed by the Brussels Philharmonic, conducted by Dirk Brossé.

Silvestri first teamed with Zemeckis on their breakthrough feature, “Romancing the Stone” (1984) and subsequently collaborated on 10 additional releases, including “Death Becomes Her” (1992), “Cast Away” (2000) and “The Polar Express” (2004).

The prolific and rangy composer’s credits also include the rom-coms “Father of the Bride” (1991), “What Women Want” (2000) and “Maid in Manhattan” (2002); action blockbusters “Predator” (1987) and “The Avengers” (2012); neo-westerns “Young Guns 2” (1990) and »

31 Things We Learned from Tony Scott’s Revenge Commentary

16 February 2015 8:45 AM, PST | | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Kevin Costner has a new film opening this week, and I’ve already forgotten about it. That’s probably a bit too harsh as I’ll watch anything starring Costner, and he’s also someone who’s starred in more movies I find it impossible to turn off once started than anyone else — No Way Out, The Untouchables, Tin Cup, Silverado, Field of Dreams, Open Range, The Bodyguard (yeah I said it) — but the man’s made some unfortunate choices in recent years. (Although I will fight you over the underseen The New Daughter and its kick-ass ending.) Back in 1990, near the height of his career, Costner joined forces with Tony Scott — a director at the equivalent peak of his own career — to deliver a dark thriller about lust and consequences in rural Mexico. Revenge tanked at the box-office, but Costner and Scott quickly got back into Hollywood’s good graces with Dances with Wolves and Days of Thunder »

Kevin Costner on Bobbi Kristina: "I Hope That God Opens Her Eyes and Lets Her Breathe"

Actor Kevin Costner was a close friend of Whitney Houston's since before the two shared the spotlight in the popular film The Bodyguard. So much so, he delivered an impassioned eulogy at the late singer's funeral. And now, watching Houston's daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown hospitalized in a coma after being found unconscious in a bathtub — just as her mother was nearly three years earlier — Costner says he's hoping for a miracle. "I hope that God opens her eyes and lets her breathe and lets her brain work, and she gets a second chance," he told Nightline co-

"We understand absolutely the pressure that the family's under," Costner told Et. "We want her to have a second chance. That's what we want for her. And if Bobbi could maybe retrace her steps, she'd maybe want a second chance at this, because life is precious. You get this one time, and sometimes in getting a second chance we're able to make the most of our lives. That's what we hope for ... If you pray out there, that's what you pray for. We pray for all our children out there who somehow fall off. It's so easy to do."

Taylor Swift Scored a Billboard Chart Milestone With 1989

4 February 2015 8:23 PM, PST | Vulture | See recent Vulture news »

For the tenth nonconsecutive week on Billboard's 200 chart, Taylor Swift's 1989 has surged to No. 1. The site underlines that Swift's the second woman in history to have multiple albums reach ten weeks at the top. T. Swift joins Whitney Houston, who notched the milestone with three albums: her eponymous debut (1986), Whitney (1987), and The Bodyguard soundtrack (1992–93). Swift's other double-digit album was Fearless, which reigned as No. 1 for 11 weeks from 2008–09. Swift nailed the feat after tallying 71,000 1989 sales last week — a figure that's not particularly high for a No. 1 contender, which is usually in the six-figure ballpark. (But — calm down — it was enough for history.) The other musicians in this elite chart club include the Beatles (with four albums), the Kingston Trio (three), Elvis Presley (three), Henry Mancini (two), and the Monkees (two). The Definitive Movies of 1995

30 January 2015 8:01 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

The 1990′s introduced the world to Quentin Tarantino, saw the creation of the Nc-17 rating, and began the slow call toward fully computer animated films. It began the slow (still slow) movement toward a more diverse industry, with the first African-American director earning an Oscar nomination (John Singleton for “Boyz in the Hood”). And the year after one of the greatest years in the history of film, 1995 came plodding along, trying to keep up. So, for the first definitive list of 2015, we are going to look back 20 years at a year that, at first glance, doesn’t look so hot. It’s ripe with flops, but it’s also full of debuts, trailblazing beginnings, and better films than it gets credit for. But, the caveat still stands: this is not a “best of” list. In fact, there are a lot of bad movies on this list. But, they are movies that made a cultural impact, »

The Weird Reason Stephen Hawking Wanted To Hang Out With Kevin Costner

According to the actor, Hawking was the one who asked to meet Costner, and, inn fact, around a decade ago, he was so insistent that he even travlled to the actor.s house. From the 79 original songs on the Oscar shortlist, five were nominated a week ago on Jan. 15: “Everything Is Awesome” from The Lego Movie, “Glory” from Selma, “Grateful” from Beyond the Lights, “I’m Not Gonna Miss You” from Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me and “Lost Stars” from Begin Again.

Following a recent trend, none of the nominees have made it to the top of the BIllboard Hot 100 chart, which tracks the success of  singles by looking at radio play, online streaming and sales.

Following the announcement of the nominations, “Glory” made its debut at No. 25 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart dated Jan. 31 and is currently No. 92 on the Billboard Hot 100.

When “Everything Was Awesome” debuted in January 2014, the song debuted at No. 7 on the Dance/Electronic Songs chart and peaked at No. 57 on Billboard’s Hot 100.

‘Whitney’ Review: Angela Bassett’s Directorial Debut Glosses Over the Big Ugly

16 January 2015 6:02 PM, PST | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Lifetime’s original movie, which stars Yaya DaCosta as the troubled late singer, feels half-baked

Despite the sentiment of one of her most famous songs, Whitney Houston was definitely not every woman, but instead a talent on a larger-than-life scale.

In her directorial debut, actress Angela Bassett‘s depiction of the “Greatest Love of All” singer, played by Yaya DaCosta (“Lee DanielsThe Butler”), attempts to show the human side of the legend, but occasionally staggers along the very line it tries to cross — where genius-level skill meets basic human need for love, understanding and companionship.

Kevin Costner Honored with BFCA Lifetime Achievement Award

14 January 2015 10:00 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Twenty-five years ago the prophetic declaration “If you build it, they will come” sounded across an Iowa cornfield in “Field of Dreams.”

Kevin Costner, the film’s star, has crafted his career along the lines of that advice, creating an oeuvre to which auds have flocked — and which the industry has rewarded with multiple kudos.

Over the past three decades the Oscar- and Emmy-winning multihyphenate has acted in, produced, written and directed some of the most beloved movies in American filmmaking, from the critical juggernaut “Dances With Wolves” to Oliver Stone’s “JFK” to Mike Binder’s gripping and — as it turned out — critically timely 2014 custody battle drama “Black or White,” which he also backed financially.

Exclusive! Angela Bassett Reveals Which 'Whitney' Scenes She Absolutely Wouldn't Include in Biopic

Angela Bassett will always love Whitney Houston.

"I'm not gonna tear her down," Bassett insists, getting candid with ETonline in a new interview to promote her directorial debut focusing on the life of the late pop-music legend.

In Whitney, premiering Jan. 17 on Lifetime, the actress-turned-director gives the public a peek into the singer's trials and tribulations behind the mic -- but don't go misreading her intentions, she says. Bassett went as far as cutting scenes from the film to avoid tarnishing Houston's legacy.

Exclusive: Behind the Scenes of Lifetime's 'Whitney' With Star Yaya DaCosta

"There were certain things in the script, and it was like, 'No, we're not gonna show that!'" the director says. "With the song with Babyface ("I'm Your Baby Tonight"), the way it was written (in the script was) she picks up a cigarette and can't concentrate on finishing the song because she's thinking about what's not going right with Bobby »

The Hollywood Reporter

A version of this story appears in the The Hollywood Reporter’s January awards issue.

But don’t for a second think that he’s slowing down: In addition to passion projects that range from financing and designing a machine to clean up oil spills to financing and co-authoring a series of family-friendly books, he has just completed a controversial new film, which he also bankrolled when others shied away from it.

Black or White, which Relativity Media will release in select theaters on Jan. 30, reunites Costner with his Upside of Anger writer-director Mike Binder and had its world premiere »
