Basic Instinct (1992) - News Poster

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Won't Be Ignored, Dan

by Dancin' Dan

The posters for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend's third season warned us. In them, Rachel Bloom spoofed iconic imagery from Mad Men, Breaking Bad, and Basic Instinct, sending a clear message: Bloom's Rebecca Bunch is one of our great anti-heroes, and she's about to go full-tilt crazy. And those posters didn't even tell the half of it. We're only four episodes into the new season, and already Rebecca's life in West Covina appears to have reached the end of the line. Things are moving so fast that each episode so far has left me breathless, perpetually on the edge of my seat wating for the next installment.

It's the best, most daring show on air right now, and it's even more jam-packed with film references than before. But Be Warned. Lots of spoilers after the jump...

Critic's Notebook: 'Candyman' Still a Superior Slasher Movie at 25

It was a year of scandals, protests and explosive racial tensions. In 1992, riots rocked Los Angeles in the aftermath of the Rodney King trial verdict, the U.S. sent military forces into war-torn Somalia, Mike Tyson was jailed on rape charges, and Bill Clinton was elected to the White House. In cinema this was the year of Basic Instinct, Malcolm X, The Bodyguard, Batman Returns, Bram Stoker’s Dracula — plus a little word-of-mouth hit by a young unknown director: Reservoir Dogs.

But the 1992 release that left a deeper impression on me than any of those listed above was Candyman. A superior...

Musician to Movie Star: In the Footsteps of Elvis

With the recent 40th anniversary of the death of Elvis, here is a look at those music stars who made a transition to film. Some were more successful than others. Some made a fleeting crossover and some are best forgotten as far as their film careers went…

In terms of the King, Elvis has an undoubtedly huge legacy as far as music goes. His influence as far as attitude, showmanship and indeed the music itself is still being felt. He was in that bracket of the most influential musical acts of his era alongside the Beatles. However his impact on film was also important. He showed that a cultural phenomenon could operate over two platforms.

Beginning in 1956 with Love Me Tender, Elvis would go onto make over 30 films until 1969. A few more iconic than others of course, such as Jailhouse Rock, Viva Las Vegas and some more interesting attempts to

Interview: Alexander Cooper

First time Producer Alexander Cooper has passionately stomped his feet into the world of independent cinema with erotic thriller Parallel. So, we caught up with him to talk about his filmmaking journey so far and the challenges of producing a self-financed indie film.

How did you become a producer and what made you want to produce Parallel?

I’ve always had an interest in film since a young age. And I’ve always wondered what it would take to make a film, although I hadn’t had any formal training in it. I had been working in a totally different sphere for quite a long time, I’d been working in law in the city, totally different. There were big changes in my life, work had dried up and my father had passed away. It was around 2014 when all these changes were going on.

So I started looking around for a script,

Sharon Stone posted the ultimate flashback on Wednesday, sharing her audition tape for her 1992 classic, “Basic Instinct.” In the video, the actress runs lines with director Paul Verhoeven who stands in for lead actor Michael Douglas. Stone brings to life the character of Catherine Tramell, the film’s femme fatale and prime murder suspect. She pretends to smoke a cigarette, takes a sip from her drink and flirts and teases her way through the lines. “Basic Instinct” followed a police detective (Douglas) who is investigating the brutal murder of a rock star. Kelly Lynch Turned Down Sharon Stone's Iconic Basic Instinct Role — Why She Says 'I Don't Regret a Bit of That'
Kelly Lynch knows why she was cast in 1988’s Cocktail.

“It was one of those parts that models get because my audition was various bikinis,” the actress, whose background was in modeling and children’s theater, tells People.

After acting opposite Tom Cruise, she got steamy with Patrick Swayze in 1989’s Road House. “To do your first two films with Patrick Swayze and Tom Cruise, who are both — were, in Patrick’s case — really amazing sweet and kind, guys, I loved working with both of them,” says Lynch, now 58. “They were really, really fun.”

‘Elle’ Blu-ray Review

Stars: Isabelle Huppert, Laurent Lafitte, Anne Consigny, Charles Berling, Virginie Efira, Judith Magre, Christian Berkel, Jonas Bloquet, Alice Isaaz, Vimala Pons | Written by David Birke | Directed by Paul Verhoeven

When you hear the name Paul Verhoeven you can’t help but think of Showgirls. Then of course he has other, beloved (some would say classic) movies like Basic Instinct, RoboCop, and Total Recall. Elle is quite a jump from these movies, but the question that will be asked is, is it a Basic Instinct or a Showgirls? The answer is something very, very, different.

When Michèle Leblanc (Isabelle Huppert) is attacked in her own home, she surprisingly carries on like nothing has happened. The head of a successful video game company, she treats her life and relationships as ruthlessly as she does her business deals. When her attacker continues to goad her though it isn’t long before her obsession with him,
