Sunil's average debut
13 March 2011 | by (Hong Kong) – See all my reviews

Sunil Shetty is one of the finest actors in Bollywood. He has gone a long way now and is one of the good actors in Bollywood. He has shown more depth in his acting with serious and comic roles from mainly the 2000s and some decent performances from the 90s. In the 90s Sunil was mainly a flawed actor who slowly improved through each film, some of his late films from 1997 and 1999 were huge disappointments while others saw him in versatile performances doing a brilliant job. Though he hammed and overacted crying in pain from most of his typical action films from the 90s, some got noticed and were critically acclaimed. While others were flops and disasters while some were average runners. Most of his films had hit music and good action mixed with an average story and average acting support.

Sunil Shetty started his career with this film Balwaan and this his first performance on the big screen. Even though this was a hit and Anth was a super hit, Sunil wasn't doing his best in terms of acting. In both films he hams and overacts though he does a firm job, he fails to evoke emotions. In Balwaan, people saw him play a tough straight forward police officer who struggles to fight against corruption and when he annoys the villains too much, he is falsely accused, his family is killed, he is imprisoned, he breaks out of jail and takes revenge. The first portion of the film is a 1990s typical college film which breaks into a fight for justice which then finally breaks into revenge. The film is poorly edited and gets on your nerves when Shetty hams and hams with dialogs trying to reform some bad people.

The problem with the film is that is slows down and shows injustice which sort of crosses the limit. The revenge angle is typical yet entertaining as you get the feel that these kind of people should be killed like this for so much injustice on innocent people. But, the film falls flat in some scenes and bores. The action scenes are a delight, college scenes are OK, comedy is funny. Songs are average, none were hits. Sunil Shetty shows very little depth and mostly flaw in his first attempt as an actor. The script lets him down but as an actor he disappoints yet he does an OK job. He does what is required and in earlier reviews of Sunil Shetty films, I said that through each film he becomes a better more improved actor. But in this film he is average. Divya Bharti lends good support as an actress, she and the others provide several light hearted scenes in the first parts of the films. Tinnu Annand has little to do, though he does what he has to do, an OK job. Danny as the villain is average, he did better as the comic villain from Lakshmanrekha(a much better film with flawed acting though). On the whole, Balwaan is a hit films but an average for me.
