Goofs

Two of the many goofs in the film are the fact that Babe Ruth never hit an infield Homerun as depicted. While he did promise a sick Johnny Sylvester that he would hit a homerun for him he did not meet him in the hospital and he only promised him one homerun, not two as the film depicts. See more »

History Shot in the Face
22 July 2011 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Being a huge fan of Baseball and the New York Yankees this was a must see for me. And having a good knowledge of Yankee history and a little of Babe Ruth's own history I thought this would great to see this on the screen but sadly I was wrong.

The story is very simple it's about the life of Babe Ruth and the demons that drove him. Now when you make a film about a historical figure you really should do your research because they truly did butcher the story of his life up. Now I'm a person that doesn't mind liberties taken in order for a film to be more interesting and I know that not every movie is going to be 100% factual. But with that being this film really took to new heights. For example they made it seem like the school he went too (ST. Mary's Industrial school) was a true hell hole for him and he never saw his parents again when this couldn't be further from the truth. He did visit his parents when he was younger it wasn't until he was older did he stop seeing them because he really did like it there at his school and didn't want to leave. Another thing he was never a home run hitter till 1919 when he was made an outfielder when it this film it really seemed like he always did hit home runs even as a pitcher. Another thing was it hardly showed anything about his pitching career which he was very good at, even close to Walter Johnson numbers. I don't think he ever hung his own coach off from a train or punched out umpires either. But I'm willing to forgive all this if only the new plot liberties were any interesting. The filmmaker's version of the Babe Ruth's story was dull and uninteresting; if you are going to mess with his history then make it interesting for example, "A league of their Own" took a ton of liberties but it however was a very good film and I still enjoy watching it to this day. And another thing about the film was I didn't care about anyone in the film because everyone was so uninteresting. One last thing is I felt this film was very cheesy it was just full of cheese like so many of the baseball scenes that actually involved baseball, like the inside the park home scene was very cheesy.

The acting however is decent except for John Goodman's performance as the famous Babe Ruth. Now I will say it was very good but only if he wasn't Babe Ruth. I did not believe for one second that he was Babe Ruth at all. Everyone else is fine however, Kelly McGillis, Bruce Boxleitner, Trini Alvarado, James Cromwell, Joseph Ragno and Michael McGrady. They had fine, not great but fine performances.

Now the set pieces were done very well and I do have to compliment them. I did feel like we were back in the 1910s-1930s. They were very well done including the stadiums looked very good. But all the other technical pieces were average and I didn't even really notice. (music, Cinematography etc.)

The Bottom Line is this is an uninteresting and not accurate film in the life of George Herman "Babe" Ruth.

Final Score 4/10
