2 may let hair down for 'Rapunzel'

14 July 2004 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Kristin Chenoweth is in negotiations to voice a lead role in Walt Disney Animation's Rapunzel: Unbraided. She could be joined by Reese Witherspoon, who is in negotiations to voice another role in the project, with several major deal points yet to work out. The CG-animated project marks the directorial debut of Disney veteran Glen Keane, who has worked as a supervising animator on such traditionally animated films as Treasure Planet, Tarzan, Pocahontas, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast. While details of the project are being closely guarded, Chenoweth would play the classic role of Rapunzel, the long-haired beauty trapped in a tower. In a new take on the tale, she encounters a modern girl and boy who have been thrust into her world. »

'Nemo' set to net overseas record

23 January 2004 | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

Finding Nemo's marathon swim is set to top $500 million at the overseas boxoffice this weekend, setting an all-time industry record for an animated film. The Walt Disney Co./Pixar CGI production, which opens in Turkey today for the start of the film's final offshore date, also will become the ninth film of any kind to cross the half-billion-dollar mark in the international market. The top-grossing overseas markets for Nemo to date are Japan ($89.2 million), the United Kingdom ($63 million) and France ($62 million). In hitting the $500 million milestone, Nemo took over the animated film championship from Disney stablemate The Lion King, which held the crown for a decade with an overseas gross of $455 million. The other top animated films -- all Disney entries released overseas by Buena Vista International -- are Aladdin ($287 million), Tarzan ($278 million) and Monsters, Inc. ($268 million). »
