Earlier this year, Disney brought on Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda to star in Mary Poppins Returns, alongside Emily Blunt. It seems the studio is doubling down with this actor-musician, bringing him aboard their remake of The Little Mermaid, where he will compose songs alongside Alan Menken. It isn't known if he will also act in this remake, but he is said to be involved in supervising the story and overseeing the writing of the script.
Deadline reports that Lin-Manuel Miranda will also produce this live-action remake with Marc Platt, who is currently prepping his long-awaited big screen adaptation of the Broadway sensation Wicked. This news comes just a few months after a report surfaced that the studio wasn't sure if they wanted to move forward with this new live-action project.
I thought I couldn’t get more stoked for a Lin-Manuel Miranda project than I already have — the news on his impending forays into Hollywood gets this Hamilton and Disney fan more and more giddy — but today I was proved wrong. Miranda will team up with legendary Disney composer Alan Menken for a live-action Little Mermaid feature, Deadline reports and sources confirm to HitFix. The Hamilton star will write the music for the new film along with Menken, whose composing credits for the House of Mouse's animated favorites include The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and Tangled. Most recently he wrote music for the less family-friendly side of animation, Seth Rogen’s Sausage Party, including opening song “The Great Beyond.” Menken is also involved in the music for Disney’s live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast, set to hit theaters in March 2017. There are a couple of ways to look at a movie like Sausage Party. On the surface, it is a movie about talking food with a bunch of potentially offensive, very on the nose metaphors, and a whole lot of cursing. Seriously, there is so much. But if you allow yourself to peel back the layers, this may very well, very seriously be a contender for the best animated movie of the year. In short, either way you look at it, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have done it again.
Sausage Party, quite simply, tells the story of what happens to food from the perspective of the food. Much in the way that Pixar explored the life of toys with Toy Story, this movie takes a look at the good, the bad, and the downright messed up aspects of a day in the life of food. And also, an actual douche. »

Three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. During her journey, Moana (voice of Auliʻi Cravalho) meets the mighty demigod Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson), who guides her in her quest to become a master wayfinder. If you happened to be tuned into the Olympics last night, you saw a new extended TV spot for the Dwayne Johnson-led Moana, and now Disney Animation has released it online. Their newest venture after the colossal success of Zootopia follows the titular Moana (Auli’i Cravalho), who sails with her hero and companion, the demi-god Maui (Johnson) to a legendary island using her navigational skills. Dwayne looks to play the sweet, goofy, shape-shifting Maui well, hitting a nice counter-note to the brave, venturous Moana to make the perfect pairing.
It promises to be a touching, rousing adventure that should continue Disney Animation’s winning streak, especially in the hands of long-time Disney writer-directors Ron Clements and John Musker (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin). See the extended TV spot below, along with character photos, for the film that also stars Alan Tudyk, Jermaine Clement, and Nicole Scherzinger.

"Let's save the world!" Disney debuted a new extended TV spot for the musical Moana during their Rio Olympics coverage. This musical is the latest from Disney Animation and co-directors Ron Clements and John Musker (of The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules, The Princess and the Frog) and is an adventure about a kick ass Hawaiian princess named Moana. We also finally get a good look at the big villain, the Lava Witch, who seems pretty gnarly in this. Auli'i Cravalho voices Moana, and the rest of the cast includes Dwayne Johnson, Alan Tudyk, Phillipa Soo, Temuera Morrison, and Jemaine Clement. So this looks like it might actually be really good, with lots going on in the story. What are those coconut monsters?! Here's the new extended TV spot for Clements & Musker's musical Moana, direct from YouTube: You can still see the first teaser trailer for Disney's Moana here, plus the international teaser here. »

We already know the Demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) who is half god, half mortal, all awesome! Although, we haven't yet had the pleasure of meeting the rest of the characters in the gorgeous story of Disney's Moana! Let's find out more about them!
Jemaine Clement (“The Bfg,” “Despicable Me,” “Rio,” “Rio 2,” “What We Do in the Shadows,” Flight of the Conchords) provides the voice of Tamatoa, a self-absorbed, 50-foot crab who lives in Lalotai, the realm of monsters. The conceited crustacean wants to be more than a “bottom feeder” and overcompensates for this perceived shortcoming by covering himself in all things shiny.

Dwayne Johnson and Auli’i Cravalho may anchor Disney’s upcoming coming-of-age tale as the mismatched leads – one, a wide-eyed explorer; the other, a flamboyant demi-god – but Moana‘s voice cast is packed to the rafters with eye-catching talent.
In the aftermath of Sdcc, the House of Mouse confirmed that Ron Clements and John Musker’s maritime adventure will also feature Jemaine Clement – hot off his turn in The Bfg – Rachel House, Temuera Morrison, singer-songwriter Nicole Scherzinger and the loveable Alan Tudyk, who holds a role in Gareth Edwards’ Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
Below, you’ll find a comprehensive overview of those new additions and, more importantly, the characters they’re set to play in Moana, which includes everything from a dim-witted rooster to a 50-foot crab that enjoys nothing more than his own company.

In the late 1980s, actor-comedian Robin Williams saw his flailing screen career revived by Good Morning, Vietnam and Dead Poets Society, both released through the Disney subsidiary Touchstone. In gratitude, he agreed to take a pay cut and voice the fast-talking, pop-culture-reference-making Genie in Disney’s Aladdin for SAG scale. His only real proviso was that Disney not overemphasize the character in the advertising. Disney agreed and then proceeded to overemphasize the holy hell out of the character in the advertising anyway. These and other developments are discussed in “The History Of Robin Williams As The Genie,” an episode of the webseries Cartoons 101. This nine-minute minidocumentary reveals that the actor and the company had a fraught, complicated relationship that spanned years.

Fans will be introduced to a new Disney princess when Moana hits theaters on November 23. We've already seen the first trailer for this animated adventure, and today we have a new Japanese trailer that travels back to Moana's childhood, showing how this princess was born. Hopefully we'll see even more footage soon, revealing how Moana's bond with the sea was formed.
Back in In April, Dwayne Johnson revealed that he will be singing in Moana, as part of his role portraying the demigod Maui. Unfortunately, this trailer doesn't feature any of the tunes sung by The Rock, but hopefully the next batch of footage will show Dwayne Johnson belting out some tunes. This video, which surfaced on the Disney Japan Facebook sets the stage for a new Disney princess to be crowned. Auli'i Cravalho will make her feature debut as Moana, who was discovered through her singing. An Oahu, »
