Actor Thomas Haden Church once hired a friend to steal his family's washing machine because his parents refused to part with the broken down appliance.
The Sideways star had just returned home for the holidays when he saw the rusted unit sitting outside the garage.
Frustrated by the eye sore, Church and his brother paid a pal $20 (£12.50) to pose as a burglar and steal the machine on Christmas Eve in a bid to get rid of the item without hurting his dad's feelings.
During an appearance on U.S. programme The Tonight Show With Jay Leno on Wednesday, he explained, "A number of years ago I came home at Christmas and my parents' washing machine had given up the go (broken down). So my dad had just moved the washing machine out into the driveway, where it had clearly sat for months because there was like a little rust river running out from underneath it.
"So it's sitting out there with all the Christmas lights and all the decorated bushes and what not (around it). So I called my brother and I said, 'We got to do something about this washing machine.' And he was like, 'Dad will not give it up for any amount of money.' I said, 'Let's hire somebody to steal it tonight.'
"So we we called somebody up that we knew was available for that sort of work on Christmas Eve. So, all evening... I'm like looking out the window...Then I got up Christmas morning and... the washing machine was gone. My dad walked outside and he came back in and was like, 'Son of a b**ch! Somebody stole the washing machine.'"
And Church kept the prank a secret for more than two decades before spilling the details on TV.
He added, "My parents are just finding out about this right now. My mum suspected it but right now my dad is waving his wrinkled fists at the television." »

Kobe Bryant may be going through a tough separation from Vanessa Bryant, his wife of a decade, but don't expect his fans to be sympathetic, says retired NBA star Charles Barkley. "I really like Kobe; I wish him all the best," Barkley, 48, said Tuesday on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. "But of course the fans are cruel. They're going to be shouting stuff at him. He's going to have to deal with that." The tartness, Leno points out, could stem from Bryant's alleged infidelities. "That's never good for a team," Barkley says of the gossip. "I'm just telling you, »

Actor Paul Rudd is to take the stage for a one-night only theatre adaptation of cult movie The Princess Bride on Thursday.
Each month Up in the Air director Jason Reitman reenacts a popular film with the cast members of his choosing at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (Lacma) as part of the Live Read series and this time he's set to put a spin on the 1987 Rob Reiner film with the Clueless star taking on the lead role of farmboy Westley.
During an appearance on U.S. programme The Tonight Show With Jay Leno on Tuesday, he said, "This Thursday I have a group of actors and we're going to read The Princess Bride for a live audience. I'm announcing for the first time right here in the lead role of Westley we're going to have Paul Rudd."
Reitman has previously staged The Apartment with Natalie Portman and funnyman Steve Carrell, and The Breakfast Club with Jennifer Garner and The Office's Mindy Kaling. »

The network is giving the former regular on The Daily Show With Jon Stewart a title that’s usually reserved for journalists. But the release tries to make it clear that CBS hasn’t forgotten the distinction between fake news and the real thing: Mo Rocca has been named Correspondent, CBS Sunday Morning, CBS News announced today. Known for his satirical news reports and commentary, Rocca has been serving as a contributor for the broadcast since 2006, and in his new capacity will continue reporting for Sunday Morning, as well as other CBS News broadcasts. “His title is Correspondent, but we see Mo, as we see all our Sunday Morning contributors, as a ‘columnist,’ bringing his own unique – and it is unique – perspective to everything he does,” commented Sunday Morning Executive Producer Rand Morrison. Rocca is a humorist, actor and Emmy award-winning writer. He is a panelist on NPR’s weekly hit quiz show, »

Actress Katherine Heigl is struggling to adjust to life on the road with her singer/songwriter husband Josh Kelley - because his crowded coach wasn't built with a bathroom.
The Knocked Up star is currently travelling across America with Kelley as he and his band open for country trio Lady Antebellum on tour, but Heigl admits her desire to stand by her man and live on his tour bus has its down sides.
During an appearance on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno on Tuesday, she complained, "I've been on the bus. Let me just try to set this up for you. It's a tour bus. And there are these little tiny, coffin-sized bunk beds. That turns you off right away. Then there's a tiny sitting area in the front. Then there's a nicer bed in the back for me and Josh, that's over the engine.
"Then there's me, his bass player, his guitar player, his drummer, his tour manager, his tech guy... it's, like, eight guys and me. It's smelly and it's dirty and it's crowded... You can't go the bathroom on it. You have to go to truck stops. That's really a fun morning. When you pull up to the truck stop and you schlep out with your little bathroom kit and people are going, 'Is that Katherine Heigl at the truck stop?'" »

Hollywood star Robert Downey Jr has said that his unborn child could be a boy. The 46-year-old, who is expecting his first kid with wife Susan in February, talked about the baby's gender in an appearance on Monday night's The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, after insisting that he isn't allowed to spill the beans. He told the Us talk show host Jay: "I am not permitted to discuss it. I keep dropping the ball everywhere - [Susan] says, 'Don't tell your cousins' and then I tell them." The Sherlock Holmes star added: "I can't say a word," before then blurting out: "We're having a boy," and covering his face in pretend shame. The star, who is already dad to 18-year-old son Indio from his previous marriage to Deborah Falconer, has been married to Susan for six years. © Splash News »

Republicans don’t watch MTV’s Jersey Shore. But they dig ABC’s Castle.
Democrats don’t like Discovery’s Deadliest Catch. But they swoon for NBC’s Parks and Recreation.
Those are a few of the findings from an annual research survey by Experian-Simmons that measures the consumer preferences of various political ideologies. In a report prepared exclusively for EW, the company calculated some of the favorite — and least favorite — TV shows of political partisans. (Specifically: the report measures which shows among the survey group were watched by the highest concentration of self-identified “Liberal Democrats” and “Conservative Republicans.”)
In the findings, »
