Lester Holt on 'Nightly News': "Until the End, I Accepted This as a Temporary Assignment"

22 June 2015 2:00 PM, PDT | The Hollywood Reporter | See recent The Hollywood Reporter news »

The June 18 announcement that Lester Holt will be the permanent anchor of Nightly News — while Brian Williams will move to cable network MSNBC — closes a particularly painful chapter at the network. Holt, 56, has been Williams' able fill-in and the weekend anchor of Nightly since 2007, while also anchoring newsmagazine Dateline. His willingness to work multiple jobs and perseverance through marathon live anchoring situations (during the 2000 presidential election recount, the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary) has earned a reputation as a work horse — and the nickname “iron pants.”

Lester Holt Reacts to Permanent Anchor Position on NBC's Nightly News, but There's a Surprise—Watch Now!

22 June 2015 1:46 PM, PDT | E! Online | See recent E! Online news »

Even though Lester Holt has been anchoring NBC's Nightly News for four months, it still came as an exciting surprise to him that he would be permanently taking over the position. Holt, who has previously anchored Dateline and weekend Today, stopped by the Today show Monday morning to express his gratitude. "Last night I found myself laying clothes out like it was the first day of school,'' Holt joked. "It was a strong broadcast when I started filling in for it, and I think we'll continue to build off our success. It's a great group of people who have kept their heads down during tough times and continue to crank out a good broadcast, so I'm just happy to be the new steward of »

Brian Williams Investigation Results Short on Detail

18 June 2015 11:29 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Thanks to his many appearances on latenight programs and willingness to serve as a guest host at private events over the years, Brian Williams developed obvious skills as a raconteur. But those abilities may have distracted him from the obligations he had as the anchor of the nation’s most-watched newscast, an NBCUniversal investigation has found.

NBCUniversal disclosed Williams “made a number of inaccurate statements about his own role and experiences covering events in the field,” the company said in a statement Thursday. His exaggerations “did not for the most part occur on NBC News platforms or in the immediate aftermath of the news events,” the company said, without citing the actual on-air instances when Williams misled his audience. Williams largely made outsize claims ” on late-night programs and during public appearances, usually years after the news events in question.”

The result? Williams will not return to the anchor chair at »

NBC’s Big TV-News Bet: Can Brian Williams, Lester Holt Deliver?

18 June 2015 10:28 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Brian Williams no longer has enough credibility among viewers to anchor NBC’s venerable evening newscast, according to the company that still employs him, but he may still be able to function in the loosier-goosier world of cable news.

NBCUniversal said Williams, a star anchor to whom it was paying $10 million a year to serve as a sort of face of its flagship network, NBC, would move to MSNBC to anchor breaking-news coverage that largely appears in the daytime, part of an ongoing effort to draw viewers back to the ailing cable network. Meantime, the network has set Lester Holt in the chair at its “NBC Nightly News,” making him the first African-American to host a TV-network newscast solo (Max Robinson co-anchored ABC’s “World News Tonight” in the 1970s). Williams will also serve as a breaking news anchor for NBC News live special reports when Holt is not available. »

Brian Williams: New Options Won’t Solve An Old Problem at NBC

31 May 2015 4:31 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

The latest twist in the Brian Williams saga came Sunday, when CNN reported that NBC News is exploring options outside of his former anchor desk that would allow him to continue his career at the company he’s called home since 1993.

But both Williams and NBC News are deluding themselves if they think such a move will put an end to this controversy.

The prospect of Williams returning to the helm at “NBC Nightly News” appears to be a non-starter now that Lester Holt is showing enough ratings strength at 6:30 p.m. to stay competitive with ABC News. Had Holt’s numbers declined precipitously enough, new NBC News chief Andrew Lack would have been in a far worse position: sticking with Williams despite his tainted reputation because of the audience he can probably still command even with his diminished stature.

But with Holt now looking like a permanent replacement, »
