One of the funniest opening five minutes I've ever seen
mrbig-310 July 1999
OK, it's got Linnea Quigley in it, and Richard Gabai directed it, so it has to be a T&A movie, and it is. For the most part it's a pretty dull one at that. From the start of the movie to the point that Burt Ward get a holy whatever in is masterfully done. From there until the very end of the movie, when what little plot there is comes to a climax, and Burt Ward gets another good one-liner in, it's pretty dull. On the plus side Traci Dali is drop dead gorgeous, so the scenes she's in are watchable even if the movie is lame. The first five minutes are so funny, I would recommend that any fan of "bad" movies should rent this. It would be worth the rental fee to watch just that much and return it.

VIEWS ON FILM review of Virgin High
burlesonjesse510 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I remember seeing 1991's Virgin High about two years after it was released. I also remember being somewhat amused by it. A doofus character named Zoomer, a late 80s neon look, the use of the word "poon", unrealistic carnal relations, a sense of goofball, juvenile innuendo. Virgin High is the type of movie that was destined to be shown on Cinemax at 4 AM. Was it a tad disposable at the time? Not fully.

Now over three decades later I decided to take in a viewing of "High" to decide whether or not I had the same feeling watching it as I did in my young adult years. I didn't. Virgin High isn't completely awful but it doesn't hold up in virtually any capacity. The film is not over the top enough to be camp. It's not raunchy enough to provoke chuckles. Finally, Virgin High isn't memorable enough to be some bonking-crazed cult pic. Watching "High" feels like you're seeing Saturday the 14th as a sex comedy, all cheap-looking sets, cheap-looking wardrobe designs, and cheesy background organ music. The movie knows it's mediocre, what with all the flimsy shenanigans and wannabe, offhanded humor going on.

As a flick about a dude and his buddies who try to infiltrate a Catholic boarding school to score, Virgin High gives us all those heightened, high school/adult stereotypes. You've got the overprotecting parents, you've got the prude, you've got the aroused nerds, you've got the testosterone bully, you've got the mindful nuns, and you've got the unpleasant female persona (you know the term I'm talking about). They all ham it up and the actors that play them, well you don't hear much from any of these people today. Oh wait Leslie Mann makes a cameo as "Squiggle" Girl. Hey, at least she escaped this mild monstrosity of cinematic penance.

Virgin High

Warning: Spoilers
Christy Murphy's (Tracy Dali, who was June in Click: The Calendar Girl Killer) strict Catholic parents - Burt Ward is her dad - are worried that their daughter is having sex with her boyfriend Jerry (Richard Gabai, who directed and co-wrote the script; he also made Assault of the Party Nerds). They send her to the Academy of the Blessed Virgin, an all-girls religious school but Jerry shows up as a priest, more determined than ever to finally sleep with Christy.

This is a movie that dares have Linnea Quigley as a character who looks down on teens who have sex, so that's definitely a twist I didn't see coming. Michelle Bauer is also in the cast as sex education teacher Miss Bush and this was Leslie Mann's first movie.

Somehow - and don't worry, we'll get to it - Jerry would return in Hot Under the Collar, another movie in which he had to become a priest and get the girl. One would think that this plan has no way of working but somehow Jerry was able to pull it off both times.

To learn more about this movie, I invite you to check out The Schlock Pit, where the great David Wain interviewed Gabai.

Oh no!; another teen sex comedy
lor_13 June 2023
My review was written in January 1991 after watching the film on RCA/Columbia video cassette.

"Virgin High" is uneven but boasts better wrting than most teen sex comedies. Highjinks in a Catholic girls school is familiar territory for video fans.

Linnea Quigley still is surprisingly convincing as by now the oldest living high school student, terrorizing her classmate at Academy of the Blessed Virgin.

Beautiful newcomer Traci Dali is sent there as punishment by her dad Burt Ward (erstwhile Robin on the "Batman" tv series). Her old boyfriend Rcihard Gabai (who also directed) arranges to invade the school disguised as a young priest, precipitating most of the mayhem.

Pic fails as a spoof of Catholic folkways, but Jeff Neill's screenplay includes some witty and fresh material. B-movie regular Michelle Bauer has a disappointing cameo as a substitute teacher, billed with her alternate moniker "Michelle McClellan".

Pic's pace sags a bit in the final reel thanks to an overextended formal dance climax.

For Linnea Quigley fans
Kastore18 July 2006
Richard Gabai has carved a unique niche in the B-movie industry. He not only is a regular player in various films – he is a director himself of a handful of DTV features. (Note: the foreknowledge that his mentors/frequent collaborators as an actor are Jim Wynorski, Fred Olen Ray, and David Decoteau helped prepare me for what to expect from one of his own films.)

"Virgin High" is a typical shoestring budget sex comedy, which I'm fairly sure was aired frequently on USA 'Up All Night' in the 90s. I may have even seen some of this film a decade ago, but even now after watching it in its entirety, am unable to pick it out from the homogenous mix of films shown so long ago. The plot concerns a sex-starved teenager (Gabai) trying to gain access to the all-girls school his squeeze has been banished to by her father (Burt Ward). He enlists his dopey friends to (supposedly) help him, his girlfriend must deal with the dorm R.A. (Quigley), and all hilarity ensues.

If you're a fan of Linnea Quigley, then perhaps it's worth watching. She is in much of the movie, including (you guessed it) a few goofy nude scenes where she has phony orgasms during one-sided sex with the school's security guard. Though the reason I watched this movie was for Michelle Bauer's role, which was disappointing. Bauer is in only one short scene that looks like it was written in only because they were able to get Bauer for a day. Burt Ward's role is done mainly for kitsch value; most of his scenes he is either playing with action figures of comic book heroes including (again, you guessed it) a Batman figure, or he is being beset by his S&M dom wife, eventually hitting the ultimate low of being caught wearing a shirt saying "Sex Cowboy" at the finale. A sad state to see one of my childhood influences in.

You can not dislike a movie akin to this. It has one purpose and that is to make you smile. It does this, although not as much as most would want. There is not much in this movie that you could not find in most eighties teen movies. My favorite moment would have to be the amusing sex scene between the rent a cop Elvis impersonator and Linnea Quigley, which effectively mocks overblown sex scenes. Linnea Quigley is topless in this scene, another reason to love it. Richard Gabai remains horrific in almost every sense. He can't act well and he isn't very funny either, he tries too hard. If he wanted to stay behind the camera, I would have no problem with that. He directed Linnea in several other movies where she was without apparel.

Lousy movie
arngny14 May 2018
I don't know what other folks see in this movie but it generally stinks. I found it to be a good sleep remedy if you don't have any sleeping pills available. Making fun of a religion, in this case Catholics, or any, is typically not amusing to say the least. I only watched it because of Burt Ward. Was curious to see how he acts post Batman. Himself as well as this film was a flop. I certainly do not recommend this trash to anyone.

I Love this movie!!!
queenb8018 September 2005
This film has a very special place in my heart as the very first Richard Gabai/Linnea Quigley vehicle I saw.I have been a fan of both of them ever since. Richard Gabai is a multi-talented man.I respect any guy who can direct, write and star in his movies and make it look like he's just hanging out with his friends. He stars as Jerry Kaminski, a horny nerd who's girlfriend gets sent to The Academy of the Blessed Virgin as punishment for coming home late from a date (not to mention flashing former Batman side kick Burt Ward). At the Academy she encounters Linnea Quigley as a nasty and mean spirited brat who wants her gone.Jerry dresses as a priest (Father Guus- "it's dutch")to infiltrate the catholic boarding school and get his girlfriend out of there. This film doesn't take itself too seriously. Rounding out the cast are Chris Dempsey playing a jerky security guard with a penchant for Elvis impersonations. Adding to the fun atmosphere is a great soundtrack by Gabai's band "The Checks".Check out the cameo by the Checks lead by Joe Toppe (a much hotter version of Michael Madson)and the hilarious nuns getting drunk scene. Watching this film is a great way to spend an evening. It's funny, sexy and has great music. Overall, it's one of my favorites.

It Actually Wasn't That Bad
nammage10 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This review doesn't contain spoilers, just easier to click the box.

I watched this film to see if I could recognize a really young (18/19) Leslie Mann. I couldn't. Recognized Robin from the Batman and Robin TV series from the 60s, though. It has bad acting, bad script, bad directing etc., etc., but I found it, even with all its flaws, to be an entertaining and funny film. My 6/10 is probably a bit too high but I enjoyed it. It was a fun film to watch, and this is probably my shortest 'review' here.

Linnea and Richard are HILARIOUS!!!
JimSthers9 September 2001
I simply love it, and not because I'm a fan of the lovely Linnea, this movie its just funny, from the opening when Richard tries to look at his girlfrien's assets, to the Guard that impersonates Elvis. I really think that Mr. Gabai is a very talented director and I wish he had made more movies like this or The AAssault of the Party Nerds movies.

Virgin High (obviously rented for the name alone) is one of the most ridiculous and retardedly horrible movies ever created. And that is why I gave it a 10! This movie was incredible easy to mock, and when you watch it with a bunch of friends the movie becomes really funny (although, I admit, the movie does manage to be funny on its own every half an hour). Assuming you don't watch this movie thinking it will be good, it will be good... kind of weird how that works out... Yeah, I also must admit that we watched it twice in a row, which tells you how awful/good it is! Next rental: Hot Under the Collar!
