To his family, François Voisin is nothing more than a humdrum civil servant. In truth, for the past twenty years he has been working as a crack secret agent. All goes well until François discovers that his son has been skipping school. Using all the resources at his disposal, the irate father tracks his son to find out where he goes when he is not in school. Then François learns that his wife Hélène is having an affair with another man. With the aid of the latest hi-tech surveillance equipment, the jealous husband finds that his rival is a second-hand car salesman masquerading as an international terrorist. To win back Hélène, François contrives an elaborate scheme in which she is coerced into playing the role of a secret agent herself. The scheme backfires badly, and François and Hélène end up in the hands of a ruthless terrorist group. Written by
Being a huge Schwarzenegger fan and of the film True Lies, catching this on SBS one night was truly a bizarre and entertaining experience. Cameron heavily based True Lies on this film and many of the classic gags and subplots are right here and it's fun to watch them in their original form.
But enough comparisons, as a standalone film this is very entertaining. The performance by Lhermitte is fantastic and so is that of his sidekick, Mitchell. Miou Miou (I say these names as I know the actors well, which I certainly don't!) gives a humourous performance as the clueless wife. And Michel Boujenah's Simon is every bit as sleazy as Bill Paxton in the remake, perhaps even better!
If you're a fan of True Lies or good world cinema in general and have a chance to see this, make sure you do.
