The literal translation of the Spanish title into English is "Distant Heels", the sound of which both Becky and Rebecca refer to when reminiscing about their respective childhoods. The English title 'High Heels' may have led to its mixed reception by critics and audiences in the US and UK who were expecting a comedy about fashion.

The talk refers to the conflicts between daughter and mother referenced in the movie Autumn Sonata (1978) by director Ingmar Bergman. In 2008 Marisa Paredes played the mother in a stage play of Autumn Sonata (1978) on the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid.
