A film of how selfishness can ruin a child's life
cosmic_quest11 October 2006
'Switched at Birth' is a two-part series based on the case of Kimberly Mays and Arlena Twigg who were accidentally switched shortly after their births in 1978. Both the Mays and Twigg families carry on unaware of this until Arlena falls ill with cardiac problems and blood tests reveal she cannot be the biological child of her parents Ernest and Regina Twigg. When Arlena succumbs to her condition at the age of nine, the Twiggs' then embark on a search to find their real daughter leading them to Kimberly who is living with her widower father Bob. As the custody battle begins, Kimberly finds herself caught between two families and Bob faces the possibility of losing the child he loves and cherishes as his own.

The adult leads all portrayed their roles well, fleshing out their characters, with Ariana Richards (better known as Lex in 'Jurassic Park') giving a touching performance as the bewildered and vulnerable Kimberly. She had a nice father/daughter rapport with Brian Kerwin, only enhancing the idea of how the young Kimberly never knew anyone other than Bob as her father.

In many ways, this is a very tragic film about how the selfishness of the Twigg family eventually shattered two families and ripped a young girl's life apart. Motivated only by their own needs to know their biological daughter to replace the child they had just lost, they paid no heed to the fact Kimberly was just a little girl who wasn't ready to deal with the emotional ramifications of the truth around her birth. Instead, they barged into her life, forcing Bob Mays into endless court battles as they pursued full custody of Kimberly and creating a media frenzy around the story.

Unlike the fictional film 'The Face on the Milk Carton', where the biological family let go when they see the trauma they are putting their child through, 'Switched at Birth' shows the results of what happens when selfish parents put a confused young girl through a custody battle. It does leave the audience considering how things could have gone much smoother if the Twiggs had only sought visitation rights or stayed away until Kimberly was older and more able to deal with things. It also leaves one wondering if Bob would have been so wrong to have ran off with his daughter until she was eighteen. Having read how Kimberly is now leading a destitute, unstable life, barely able to keep a roof over her head and maintain a job, this film goes a long way to explaining the contributing factors to her life as an adult today.

good movie
kkeelywwilson15 August 2006
I thought this was a really good movie. I had seen it years ago when it was first released. I still catch it on reruns here and there. I felt for both families. Unfortunately hospital personnel weren't held accountable and both families suffered. Especially Kim. From the articles and stories I have read about her she has had a pretty rough life. Although as adults, we become responsible for our actions, I can't help but believe that she was traumatized and was affected by the consequences for the hospital's negligence. I hope eventually she is able to turn her life around and lead a somewhat normal one. For herself and the children she has. I believe I read that she has two children. The last article I read stated that she had gotten into prostitution. God be with you child and I hope everything works out for you.

Sad story of selfish grownups
alliesmom976 June 2005
Warning: Spoilers
I have seen this movie three times and I really like it. It is very well acted by everyone involved, and it moves along at a good pace.

SPOILERS IF YOU DON"T KNOW THE STORY Unlike other reviewers, I find the Twiggs to be the bad guys. Hours after burying Arlena they were ready to rush out and find their "real" daughter. At no point did they show any concern for what was best for Kimberly. If you listen to them, it was always about "their" rights. They cared nothing for the fact that a little girl's life was being turned upside down. One wonders what they would have done had Arlena lived. Would they have told her "sorry, you're not our daughter" and swapped her back? Or would they have insisted they had a right to BOTH girls and Bob Mays was entitled to nothing (that would be my guess.) The bottom line is that this movie showed how selfish adults can be. I agree that the testing needed to be done and Kim told of the results, but it should have been with the understanding that the Twiggs would have only as much involvement in her life as SHE was comfortable with. Would that have been hard on the Twiggs? Maybe so, but parenthood is all about making choices that are best for your child, even if it's not what's best for you. The Twiggs were so determined to force themselves on this little girl that they lost sight of that fact. Given enough time to work things out at her own pace, maybe Kim would have been OK. But these people wanted to pretend like the first nine years of this child's life had never happened...I recall one interview with Kim where she said Regina asked could she call her Arlena. Sick and wrong, baby, sick and wrong! Interestingly enough, Kim is now 25 years old, has been married and divorced, had two children (one of whom she temporarily lost custody of), and is practically living on the streets. And her "real" mom refuses to acknowledge that her actions of years ago play any part in this self-destructive behavior.

great movie
Bobbycenturion20 February 2005
This movie was something I just happen to come across on a rainy day, and I am glad I did, this was an excellent movie, all the acting was well done! This is one I will love to watch again, and if this ever happened to me, or I was the lawyer representing the Twiggs, I would have said to only get visitation rights, because she may be their biological daughter, but your parents are the people who raised you, and that's the most important thing in your life! Other family dramas with this sort of situation I could really recommend are "Flight of the Navigator", "The Majestic", and the one episode of 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' called "Suddenly Human". watch them all, they are all very good!

In this case, everyone is a victim
elizabethbennett23 August 2004
I caught this on LMN the other night. I followed this story for a long time and it seemed to grow worse and worse with time. I have heard that Kimberly Mays has had a hard time and really, if I had gone through what she did, I would not be much better off. She loses her mom at 2, loses a stepmom at 5 or 6 and finds out that she had a "first mommy", finds out that she is not the biological child of the man who raised her since birth when she is 10 and was caught in this custody battle for years. I can understand why Bob Mays reacted as he did. Also, can understand the Twiggs and their need to know Kimberly. Plus, what Arlena had to go through in her short life. Kimberly, Arlena, Bob Mays, the Twiggs......there is no bad guy; they were all victimized in a situation that had not come to light since the days of Solomon. I hope Kim will be able to find some security and happiness despite what she has been through. The movie was also good and everyone did well. Kudos to all! Well done!

BRIAN KERWIN / separated at birth!!!
byllyrs25 July 2006
i am watching this silly movie as i write this and AHHH, its terrible! i couldn't sleep and so i got up and turned on the boob tube.As i flipped on the TV, Brian Kerwins image caught my eyes(if it weren't for him and i just happen to be quite attracted to blond mustachioed white males) i probably wouldn't be watching this crap. So i decided to get on MDB to look up his profile/bio. in doing so i found out that this silly LIFTIME made-for-trailer-trash-movie is based on real events!!! TEE-HEE!!! but anyway, my true gay nature compelled me to watch it through its entirety. Sobb!! but in looking up the archives based on other viewers comments and questions, it appears to me that the Twiggs were real monsters in having tried to win custody over this poor child. Two families in realty were ruined and the child in question ended up totally F'ed up in her young adulthood! thanks a lot selfish inconsiderate adults.

Excellent Movie
weirdthingsneedlovetoo3 September 2005
I saw this movie first when I was about 'Kimberly's age, and I found it very interesting...I immediately got hooked on it, and I just saw it again on TV today...It's a very good movie about Kimberly Mays, who finds out she was switched at birth even after losing her mother, and step mother. Her Biological family goes on a search for her and is trying to meet her just so they can meet their child, after their daughter, Arlena, passed away. (robert mays' biological child)It was a very moving movie, and I am going to try and buy it, because it is so good. The thought of having to go through all of what she did is amazing...definitely two thumbs up!

the best mini-series ever
Erin-108 July 1999
What to say about "Switched at Birth?" I've seen this movie at LEAST a half a dozen times, probably more. It doesn't take much to get sucked into this compelling story. All the actors involved did a wonderful job portraying the real-life Twig and Mays families. I don't know what it is about this story that makes it so compelling. I guess it's that what both families go through is so touching and they make it seem as raising the wrong child could just happen to anyone. Great acting by Bonnie Bedelia and a pre-Jurassic Park Ariana R

GREAT MOVIE!
roxymay795 May 2004
This was a great movie. The actors that played the Twiggs parents I am fans of them both, good performances by all the cast. I have 2 kids myself. If I found out at a later date, that my son or daughter was not my own, and someone else had them (hospital error, not a kidnapping) I would want visitation & get to know my him or her. However, if my son or daughter (biological, not the one I raised) wanted to remain in the home they were raised in and it was a suitable home (mothers have to look at for their kids)that would be okay, I would want my child to be happy. If one of my kids died, I would not only greatly miss them, but if they turned out to be the biological child of someone else, due to a switch, I would feel bad that the parent of the child I raised (their biological child) did not get the memories I did & share shories with that child. I am glad to hear that the real Kimberly Mays got to stay with her father who raised her,but nothing against the Twiggs. I just think they should have fought just for visititaion, not full custody. After all this poor man lost his wife, the daughter he raised he finds out, is not his own & his real daughter has also died. It is sad that the daughter the Twiggs raised died & I am sorry for their loss. However, after 10 years, kids are going to be happy with who has raised and cared for them for so long & they are not going to be happy about being uprooted from the list they know. I hope they are all doing well!!

Best made for TV movie ever!!
hpayne11 November 2001
I loved this movie. I saw it 8 years ago and would still love to see it again. The character portrayals were so excellent, especially those by the young actresses. The movie was heartfelt and you really felt the pain of the families as if it was happening to you yourself. I strongly recommend this movie to viewers of all ages!

I have met Kim
directionlife19 December 2006
I do not recall seeing the movie but I have met Kim personally and stumbled upon this story by accident. I love to Google people to see what I find and well I found this. Let me tell everyone she is doing great and because of her past I feel she has to be the strongest most beautiful woman I may have ever met. Kim is a wonderful mother to her daughters and yes she may have messed up in her past but darn I did too and I am sure you did. God forbid there would had been a camera following us. I have not met a women yet that was not molested or rape and it did not lead to fast behavior in some way at one point in their life but the bigger picture is that she is working to overcome her past and build a bright future.

Like a soap opera idea and it really happened!
dhainline124 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I recently read about Robert Mays aka Bob and found out he died almost 4 years ago. How sad he and Barbara were denied knowing Arlena their birth daughter! Kimberly Michelle Mays went through so much from the ages of 2 to 9 with the loss of Barbara Mays (the woman she thought was her birth mom) and the divorce of Bob and his second wife. No one really knows who or what happened to cause a switch of Kimberly Mays and Arlena Beatrice Twigg. A very young Ariana Richards (Jurassic Park) was so good at showing Kim as a girl caught in the middle of the custody fight between Bob Mays (Brian Kerwin) and Ernest (John M. Jackson) and Regina Twigg (Bonnie Bedelia). All of the grown-ups in this cluster(expletive) were very good at showing the raw emotions of the players in this tragedy! Erika Flores as the doomed Arlena Twigg brought a vulnerability to the character of a dying child who was devoted to the parents she had no idea weren't hers! Next to "Baby M" this drama is one of the best child custody movies ever!

Streaming
klaphakebeck10 December 2023
This used to be available to watch on YouTube, but in 2023, I can't find it. Where can I go to stream this excellent movie from 1991? Is it available to purchase on DVD anywhere? It's one of those movies I could watch over and over!

The acting was beyond top notch! These poor families and what they both suffered through is unimaginable! Ariana Richards and Erica Flowers are wonderful and brilliant child actors! I hope Bonnie Bedelia got an award for her portrayal of Regina Twigg.....as well as the Ariana and Erica! This movie really pulls at your heart and soul! The emotional execution is blown out of the water!

Kim Mays?
boz-ter3 February 2007
I do have a little more insight on this story then most people do, I have at one time lived with the Twiggs, who are a very loving caring family, and the movie made them look like crap. At the time when Kim Mays lived there, I live there also. A lot of people think that the Twiggs did not look out for Kim, that is not true at all. I still talk to Kim's biological brother pretty often. I guess the best way to put it, is the movie is wrote well, however, the movie is fake, it does not really tell you what really happened. How do I know? Well because I lived it! I have talked to Kim many times. But here is what really has been going on with Kim, she is not doing great, she has a drug problem, she has been in and out of pasco county jail on a number of occasions on both prostration and drug charges. That is the real Kim Mays
