Patrick Dempsey runs from mobsters
18 November 2015 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

I've seen "Run" (1991) twice and enjoyed it both times. This time around, I realized how cleverly the story is put together. Patrick Dempsey, a law school student without much money, is doing an odd job delivering a car when it breaks down. While waiting for repairs to be done, he goes to a poker game where he encounters the brutish son ("Denny") of the local crime chief, played by Ken Pogue. In a tiff, Denny slips, hits his head and dies. Everyone in the backroom casino, especially Denny's bodyguards, is so deathly afraid of Pogue that they blame Dempsey. He's a runner, and he runs and manages to escape. The rest of the movie is the chase, and what a chase it is.

Pogue puts up a $50,000 reward for Dempsey, while also pressuring the police chief. He seals the city. Even before that, two cops are going after Dempsey for this reward. Dempsey is forced sometimes to go on foot and sometimes to steal cars and at several points to rely on the cute Kelly Preston whom he met in the casino. His escapes from pursuit are narrow, unpredictable and well-staged. The action is fresh.

Innocent man-on-the-run goes way back, at least to "The 39 Steps" (1935). This modern variation works well.
