Storyline

Edmund is a boy whose favorite story of Chanticleer, a rooster whose singing makes the sun rise every morning until the Grand Duke of Owls, whose kind despises the bright sun, makes him look like a fraud. With Chanticleer driven from his farm, the owls put it under a spell of perpetual darkness and rain. As Edmund's own farm floods, he calls to Chanticleer, only to summon the Duke himself who transforms him into a kitten to devour him. Rescued by Chanticleer's former friends Patou the hound, Snipes the magpie and Peepers the mouse, they go on an adventure to the city where the rooster had gone and became a great singing rock star! Trivia

The Grand Duke's Owl Minions have names including Urek, Fred, Furrow, Blue, Vertigo, and Varek. Urek is the tall brown owl, Fred is the purple owl, Furrow is the salmon-pink owl with a military-style haircut, Blue is the tall blue owl, Vertigo is the short bearded gray owl, and Varek is the short brown owl with the ponytail, green cape, and headband. However, their names are never mentioned in the movie. They were played by the voices of T.J. Kuenster (who also was the songwriter, one of the writers, musicians and music producer of the movie and soundtrack and who has also been popular for being Glen Campbell's keyboardist, musical director, and musical conductor for his band), Jim Doherty, John Drummond, and Frank Kelly. But during the scenes when The Grand Duke and his Minions are singing "Tweedle Te Dee" and "The Owls' Picnic", they were voiced by T.J. Kuenster, T. Daniel Hofstedt, Scott Caple, Mark Swan, and Kevin Gallagher. See more »

Goofs

It's established that Chanticleer's crowing causes the sun to rise every day. But, early on in the movie, the sun rises without Chanticleer's crowing. And after he leaves shamed, it stays dark and begins to rain eternally. Later the sun rises again after Chanticleer returns to crow, with no explanation as to why the plot seemingly contradicts itself. See more »

Excellent family film
26 April 2005 | by (Canada) – See all my reviews

I bought this film almost ten years ago and each of my children (14, 12 and 5 years old) has enjoyed multiple viewings of it. I include myself as a fan. The story is about a rooster who loses his ability to crow, partly because of the villainous owl, the Grand Duke, and his dastardly plans. The characters are interesting and well developed. The plot has plenty of suspense and villains for young children (and their parents); romance, heroes worth cheering, and a clear story line. The songs are catchy, the singing excellent, and appropriate for the story. Basing the main character, Chanticleer, on Elvis is quite appropriate and adds a bit of humor for adults. This film is equal in quality to Don Bluth's Thumbelina.
