IMAX: Ring of Fire

This 1991 production joins a growing list of made-for-imax titles that are suffering sloppy transfers to home video. Otherwise incredible footage of some of the world’s most volatile areas are compromised by poor transferring, that leaves the audience wondering if they’ve been staring through a fish bowl. Accomplished actor and voice talent Robert Foxworth narrates, but what should be an explosive education is stunted by warped visuals and outdated information.

Released in 1991, Ring of Fire simply isn’t up to date. The 1989 San Francisco World Series earthquake features heavily, when ten years later there are far worse and more current examples of Mother Nature’s wrath. Furthermore, now that everyone owns a personal camera and the Internet has made us one global network, we’ve seen visuals that rival even the best IMAX cameras for immediacy and intensity.

Mini Recap – Supernatural 4.03 "Free to Be You and Me"

Last week, Sam and Dean broke up the band, right? This week… the band's still broken up. And these guys seriously need to put on their Big Girl Panties and man up so they can stop the Apocalypse, damn it! I'm over the Angst — let's get these guys back together so they can kick ass and take names. But we're not quite there yet.

This week, Sam and his Ginormous Shoulders wake up shirtlessly (that's a word, shuddup) in a hotel room not quite alone. Jess (Adrianne Palicki) is hanging out on his bed, complete with White Nightgown of Doooom. With no mention of why the hell she was standing on that streetcorner at the end of 'Bloody Mary' (thanks, Kripke… jeeze), she proceeds to lay the guilt trip on Sam by telling him that whatever he's feeling is deep down inside of him and he can't change who he is.

Video Game Review: ‘Guitar Hero 5’ Places Emphasis on Quantity Over Quality

Chicago – Perhaps you’ve seen the clever commercials for “Guitar Hero 5,” in which a dozen or so hot women dance around with plastic guitars and Hugh Hefner extols the virtues of “variety”? There has arguably never been more truth in advertising. Like a roomful of Playboy Playmates, “Guitar Hero 5” gives fans all the variety they could ask for, but truly falling in love with any individual part of the title is a little more difficult.

Video Game Rating: 3.5/5.0 Maybe it’s simply a byproduct of the international love affair with music games sort of fizzling out, but my response to “Guitar Hero 5” is that the title is exactly what I expected it to be - no more and no less. The bang-for-your-buck approach to the game is unassailable as the experience is simply enormous with dozens of songs, challenges, and multi-player possibilities, but is more always better?
