Giallo-noir with excellent cinematography
28 August 2016 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

The major attraction of this film is its lighting and beautiful cinematography, by Janusz Kaminski. While its debt to film noir is evident in its shadowing, and the film is classified as noir by critic Andrew Spicer, its hues and shadows set them apart even from other films in color.

This film is also a giallo, a late giallo. It has a rain-coated killer who wields a long knife and vividly slashes his female victims. It has gratuitous nudity and sleaze.

Unfortunately, being a neo-noir doesn't automatically enter a film into the category of being a good noir. The basic plot is reasonable but not really fresh. Mystery fans will have no problem honing in on what's going on. What brings the film down drastically are the acting, direction, editing and story development.

How does one describe star Ray Sharkey's inept performance here? You know it's bad when you sense that the actor is acting, rather than seeing the character as a person. Bad direction can be responsible, partly or wholly; one doesn't know. One critic writes "Sharkey seems lost and unfocused in THE RAIN KILLER and unable to gel with his co-stars while chewing scenery inappropriately. Not that anyone else in the movie is delivering a great performance — not even Chiklis, whose character is confined to the baseball caps he wears."

However, apart from the cinematography, so much else in the film is ineptly done, even the staging of the murders, that director Ken Stein must bear a good deal of responsibility. He has but one other film credit, in 1993.
