IMDbTV Pick: Showtime's "Penny Dreadful"

The subtle trick Showtime's "Penny Dreadful is that it is far less about the blood, gore and the specter of gruesome death than the sharp pain and exhilarating pleasure of living, and the terror of feeling alone even in close company. Read our review in the May Picks section.

Storyline

"Prisoner of Honor" documents the French Dreyfus Affair that saw a French Captain sent to Devils' Island for espionage near the end of the nineteenth century. Richard Dreyfuss plays Colonel Picquart who is given the job of justifying Dreyfus' sentence. Instead, he discovers that Dreyfus, a Jew, was merely a convenient scapegoat for the actions of the true culprit, a member of the French General staff. His attempt to right the wrong sees his military career ended and the famous French author, Emile Zola, found guilty of libel. Written by Anonymous

HBO's one great original movie
27 December 2003 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

I saw this film when it first came out in 1991. It features a theme common to most HBO original movies: prejudice and bigotry directed towards minorities. Unlike nearly all of those other films, however, this one isn't pedantic or cloying; Prisoner of Honor is the one that HBO "got right". Credit must go to the director, and to a fine cast. Richard Dreyfuss gives his best screen performance, bar none. A very entertaining film, and one that might spark an interest in history.
