Suicide of his brother arouses suspicions in Michael O'Keefe
12 January 2016 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"Out of the Rain" (1991) is listed by Spicer as a noir. Yes, it's definitely a neo-noir, and one that neo-noir fans should appreciate. I enjoyed it. I'd rate it as 5.5, or somewhat below par overall, mainly because it's rather slow getting going, the music repeats too much, some of the acting is on the stiff side, and the director seems to have let the camera run too much on the often impassive Frank (Michael O'Keefe).

But this film has a very good brooding atmosphere, filmed in towns in eastern upstate New York. The streets are often quite empty. Storefronts are not thriving. Old houses and brick structures predominate. A decaying tanning factory is one locale, near which is a small trailer in which Frank's brother was found dead, supposedly by a shotgun suicide. Another good location is an old arcade or park.

The cops have a smell of corruption about them, or at a minimum are overbearing in their authority. Something is not quite right here, as brother Jimmy's girlfriend Jo (Bridget Fonda) raps with Frank about his promise to take her away from the town. Her desperation is more than evident. Fonda's acting is quite interesting here in portraying a complex character. Plus Frank sees his father, the factory owner, taking money from a local guy who's on the wrong side of the law.

After a slow and extended start, which is often the case in noirs that build psychology and character, there is enough payoff to warrant attention to this film. The rating of 3.6 is surely too low, indicating to me that voters were not mainly a noir audience.
