Jamie Lee Curtis to Star in, Produce Funeral Home Comedy in Development at CBS (Exclusive)

19 September 2017 4:00 PM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Jamie Lee Curtis will star in and executive produce a new multi-cam comedy in development at CBS, Variety has learned exclusively.

The project, titled “Quality of Life” is described as a multi-generational sitcom set at a family-run funeral home, tackling life through the unique perspective that growing up in a funeral home gives you. Curtis will play the family matriarch. She and Janis Hirsch came up with the story for the project, with Hirsch writing the script. Both Curtis and Hirsch will also executive produce, along with Eric and Kim Tannenbaum. CBS Television Studios will produce.

The news comes on the heels of the announcement that Curtis will reprise her iconic role as Laurie Strode in the upcoming “Halloween” film. Curtis’ character will have a final confrontation with Michael Myers, the ghoulish masked figure who has plagued her since she narrowly escaped his killing spree on Halloween night four decades ago. Adam Levine Slams ‘Utterly Horrible’ VMAs

28 August 2017 6:37 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Adam Levine lashed out at the MTV Video Music Awards on Twitter Sunday night, calling the annual fete “utterly horrible.”

The Maroon 5 frontman was outraged after best new artist nominee Julia Michaels’ performance was cut short on the telecast.

“It’s always exciting to see how utterly horrible the VMAs will be. They really delivered so far this year,” Levine tweeted, using the hashtag “holy f—” in all caps.

He added, “Julia Michaels gets cut off while she’s singing and Lorde gets to Not sing her whole song.” Lorde performed an interpretive dance during the awards to the tune of her song “Homemade Dynamite,” after tweeting earlier in the evening, “I have the flu so bad I needed an IV.”

Levine implored his Twitter followers in an earlier tweet to vote for Michaels in the best new artist category, calling her “my girl.”

Newswire: Here’s what’s coming to (and going from) Hulu in September

16 August 2017 5:07 PM, PDT | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

August has been Friends Month at Hulu, with the streaming service getting a big collection of movies and TV shows that are all about people who have friends or whatever, so it’s appropriate that September will be Family Month—a month dedicated to movies and TV shows about people who either have families or don’t have families because their parents were gunned down in an alley. In September, Hulu subscribers will be able to catch such family-centric content as The Addams Family, Addams Family Values, season 13 of Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Batman, Batman Returns, Carrie, My Girl, Robocop, And You Thought Your Parents Were Weird, Silent Hill, Freaky Friday (1977), Freaky Friday (2003), and Lilo & Stitch—though that one’s technically about ‘ohana, which means family.

Subscribers will also be able to watch a bunch of classic Tgif sitcoms, most of which revolve around families »

Need to catch up? Check out the previous Nashville recap here.

Are you there, Luke Wheeler? It’s me, a troubled Nashville enthusiast.

Before you say anything, yes. I was one of the people routinely calling you out as a ridiculous corporate whore who’d slap his name on anything for the right price. Yes, I often mocked you for talking about your “brand” and “Luke Wheeler Worldwide” (whatever that was) and all of that ridiculousness.

But now I see the terrible truth of it all: You above anyone else in Music City could’ve helped avert the crisis that »

Venice Gap-Financing Market Unveils Selected Projects, Including Vr Works

15 July 2017 1:17 AM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Rome – The Venice Film Festival’s Gap-Financing Market, which helps indie European and international producers secure the final portion of financing for their projects, has announced the 47 feature films, documentaries, TV series, and virtual-reality projects that have made the cut.

They comprise 25 feature films and documentaries, many of which have been making the rounds of co-production forums on the festival circuit. What distinguishes the Venice market is that submissions must have at least 70% of financing in place, meaning that these projects have a better chance of actually reaching completion.

Last year the Venice Film Market — which besides the gap-financing component, also includes the Final Cut in Venice platform for films in post from countries with struggling film industries and a book rights’ mart — was re-branded as Venice Production Bridge.

The idea is that Venice, which cannot compete with Toronto in terms of  bona-fide market heft, is pioneering an informal new-concept market dedicated to original works-in-progress and open »

Review: DC Super Hero Girls: Intergalactic Games

25 May 2017 2:38 PM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

What a great time to be a grandparent (or so I’m told). There are now plenty of books, games, clothing, and video to encourage girls to be strong and independent. DC Comics offers up their Super Hero Girls line and this week they have released their second animated feature, DC Super Hero Girls: Intergalactic Games, a 77-minute romp.

Writer Shea Fontana improves on the first offering with a story set at the Intergalactic Games where Earth’s powered women take on the vile challengers from Korugar Academy. To prepare for the competition Academy teacher Doc Magnus (Phil Lamarr) is building battlebots and supervising Batgirl (Mae Whitman) and Bumblebee (Teala Dunn) as they build their own. Principal Waller (Yvette Nicole Brown) is not amused nor is she happy that Magnus’ bots seem to have free will but were not programmed with any morality, a theme that plays out across the 77-minute fast-paced story. »
