Virginia Madsen doesn't know whom to believe
9 May 2016 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"Love Kills" (1991) is the perfect title for this neo-noir. Virginia Madsen has been married to Jim Metzler for 7 or 8 years. He's becoming a successful author, having written a book on criminals that's going into a second printing. She's wealthy; her parents and grandparents were big wheels in their town. But Madsen is unhappy because Metzler is unfaithful. She wants a divorce and seeks the counsel of Erich Anderson, close family associate. He advises her to go slow and rebuild her marriage.

Meanwhile Madsen's pal, Kate Hodges, is urging her to free herself, loosen up and have an affair herself. Madsen takes up Lenny von Dohlen for a one night stand. The next morning he tells her that Metzler hired him for $50,000 with a $25,000 up front payment to kill her and that he's the killer in chapter 5 of Metzler's book. (He killed his father.) He's decided not to kill her though, but he warns her that her hubby will simply hire someone else.

Madsen checks up with Anderson and finds out that her husband did indeed liquidate $25,000 of stock. Metzler now wants a reconciliation. The story she gets from him about von Dohlen is that he's a schizophrenic who can't be believed and that his story is absurd. Metzler installs new security at their mansion.

This scenario brings us to the start of Act 2. The ensuing complications are developed nicely, leaving Madsen harried and in doubt as to whom to believe. New threats to her emerge, including her suspicion of Anderson. The screenplay artfully does its best to keep us in the dark as well until the very end. Although a certain amount of ratiocination works against this effort to becloud, the story still sweeps us along into identifying with Madsen's emotions and her great difficulty in sorting out who might be attempting to kill her. Madsen is very good at portraying someone with considerable strength of mind and character but who is also subject to emotions that strongly influence her beliefs. The remaining characters are just ambiguous enough, none being perfect human beings, to keep us guessing.

Not bad, offering a bit of a roller coaster ride. Not bad at all, even if you see through it before the conclusion.
