This film, released on the same day as Phool Aur Kaante (1991), was expected to break records. Unfortunately, the relationship between Prem and Pallavi/Pooja was considered incestuous by purists and the moralists, and it was completely rejected by the Indian audience. Its failure demoralized Yash Chopra and to this day he laments its rejection by the Indian audience. However, it was not a total loss; it became one of the biggest hits ever in the Indian overseas market.
In the parody sequence where Prem and Pooja try to cheer up the sulking Viren, Dai Maa joins in with "Aaj Phir Jeene Ki Tamanna Hai". This was Waheeda Rehman's hit song from one of her best films - Guide (1965). Later, she thought it was rather unusual to be dancing to her own song from another film and considered it to be her ultimate tribute.
The trivia item below may give away important plot points.
Yash Chopra was advised to change the ending whereby Pooja convinces Viren to stop sleeping with her mother's ghost (in a manner of speaking). But the director insisted that if he had changed the ending it wouldn't have been the film he set out to make.
