This film, released on the same day as Phool Aur Kaante (1991), was expected to break records. Unfortunately, the relationship between Prem and Pallavi/Pooja was considered incestuous by purists and the moralists, and it was completely rejected by the Indian audience. Its failure demoralized Yash Chopra and to this day he laments its rejection by the Indian audience. However, it was not a total loss; it became one of the biggest hits ever in the Indian overseas market.

In the parody sequence where Prem and Pooja try to cheer up the sulking Viren, Dai Maa joins in with "Aaj Phir Jeene Ki Tamanna Hai". This was Waheeda Rehman's hit song from one of her best films - Guide (1965). Later, she thought it was rather unusual to be dancing to her own song from another film and considered it to be her ultimate tribute.

Yash Chopra conceived the film with Vinod Khanna in mind. He promised Vinod that he would do the film. But when Yash Chopra thought about it, Vinod Khanna could no longer look like a 20 year old. He informed Vinod that he was not in the film. This upset Vinod. Jackie Shroff had just shaved off his mustache for Diljale and sent his pictures to Yash Chopra. Yash liked it but still didn't feel like Jackie looked young enough . Thats when Anil kept insisting he do the film. Yash Chopra did not like Anil Kapoor's mustache. Anil then got Injured and stayed home for a month. This is when Anil shaved off his mustache and won Yash Chopra's approval.

After the film released, UK actress went to the media and abused Yash Chopra and Anil Kapoor. Her allegations were from the role not being what was narrated to her, to Yash Chopra and Anil Kapoor expecting her to do them " favors". She was upset she was left out of the publicity of the film. She suggested Kiron Kher dub her dialogues because she was not familiar with Hindi. But when she saw the film thought Kiron Kher did a terrible job. Dippy went on to abuse the industry saying no one in the industry had principle's or morals. She left the film industry after one film due to the bad experience .

The trivia item below may give away important plot points.

Yash Chopra was advised to change the ending whereby Pooja convinces Viren to stop sleeping with her mother's ghost (in a manner of speaking). But the director insisted that if he had changed the ending it wouldn't have been the film he set out to make.
