70 years ago today, Mickey Mouse welcomed BBC back to the airwaves for the first time after World War II. The television service had been shut down for nearly seven years when broadcasting ceased during the war. The 1933 cartoon Mickey’s Gala Premier was the final program broadcast on BBC on September 1, 1939 before it went off the air, and it was the first program transmitted when BBC was back in 1946. The cartoon chronicles Hollywood celebrities joining Mickey and Minnie at Grumman’s Chinese Theatre for the premiere of a new Mickey Mouse movie. Other notable June 7 happenings in pop culture history:  • 1955: The game show The $64,000 Question premiered on CBS. Disney’s The Jungle Book storms worldwide box office on opening weekend

This weekend Disney’s The Jungle Book has proved who is the real “jungle VIP” by debuting at number one at the UK box office with an estimated £9.5 million opening weekend. The ‘baloo-ming’ marvellous result sees the film become the third biggest opening this year following only Batman vs Superman and Deadpool with critics calling the film out as a cinematic experience not to be missed. The result also sees Disney take both 1st and 2nd place at the UK box office with Disney’sZootropolis still delighting audiences.

Jungle Fever has been taking the world by storm. In India the film has already overtaken the entire lifetime of Titanic and Life of Pi within just one week and is the third biggest Hollywood release ever, only behind Furious 7 and Jurassic World.

Meanwhile in the Us an estimated $103.6 million box office takings were registered, making it the second largest April opening in industry history. »

You could say Jungle Fever has taken over the globe, with Disney’s Jungle Book opening to a huge box office haul, taking nearly €1 million at the Irish box office, becoming the country’s second biggest opening behind Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. In India, Jon Favreau’s delightful and charming remake has already overtaken the lifetime grosses of both Titanic and Life of Pi. The U.S. saw the movie become the second largest April opening in industry history, with an estimated $103.6 million haul. Add this to it global gross of $136.1 million, and it has taken in an impressive $240 million worldwide. »

Bleiberg bringing boxing drama 'Back In The Day' to Efm

Us production and sales outfit Bleiberg Entertainment is handling international sales on boxing drama Back In The Day and will unveil the first footage to buyers at Berlin’s European Film Market (Efm) this week.

Directed by Paul Borghese, Back in the Day is about a half-Italian, half-Puerto Rican boxer who lost his parents and was raised under the wing of the mafia in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn.

William DeMeo wrote the screenplay and stars alongside Alec Baldwin and Danny Glover. Annabella Sciorra (Jungle Fever), Michael Madsen (The Hateful Eight) and Mike Tyson (Ip Man 3) round out the cast.

DeMeo produced the film. Roey Zaken is executive producer. »

The Night David Bowie Helped Me Believe in Love Again

The world has been mourning the loss of David Bowie over the last several days, and if we needed further evidence, his death has revealed just how profound an impact his work has had on us both culturally and individually. Each of us has our own personal experience with Bowie, or more often, a series of them.  Like many, my earliest introduction was via “Labyrinth” and his indelible portrayal of the Goblin King. I don’t even think I connected the dots that this was the same man who played Pontius Pilate in Martin Scorsese's “The Last Temptation of Christ” when my parents introduced me to that film a few years later, another that made an imprint one me that remains to this day. Bowie’s work has been with me throughout my life, whether as an inspiration as a student in film school or to serve to spark my imagination as a child. »
