A Disappointment
cunningswine22 April 2003
Arguably the worst movie by director Ann Hui. Ann being eulogized for her talent of walking a tightrope between being commercial and being artistic, this one just falls between two stools and fails to satisfy anyone. Probably most notable for being the last film of the Hong Kong diva Cherie Chung, who announced her marriage and retirement shortly before the shooting had been finished.

Odd mix of arthouse and thriller

Warning: Spoilers
ZODIAC KILLER is a strange little combination of arthouse drama and gangster thriller, made by Hong Kongers but set in Japan. It's yet another film put out by Andy Lau during his busiest period, but it's also one of his most forgettable. He plays an unlikely student striving to make ends meet in Japan, before becoming involved with femme fatale Cherie Cheung, a girl who trouble follows around. The social commentary exploring the plight of the Chinese living in Japan is quite interesting, but the half-hearted thriller aspects don't really work too much and there are too many drawn-out scenes and barely-drawn characters for this to entertain. The downbeat ending packs one heck of a punch!
