Richard Gere To Star In Jon Avnet’s ‘Three Christs’

Richard Gere is set to star in Jon Avnet’s (“Fried Green Tomatoes,” “Risky Business”) “Three Christs,” based on a biographical novel by Milton Rokeach.

Eric Nazarian and Avnet penned the adaptation, with Avnet set to direct. The story follows a doctor (played by Gere) who is treating three paranoid schizophrenic patients at the Ypsilanti State Hospital in Michigan, each of whom believe they are Jesus Christ.

Avnet and Dr. Aaron Stern will produce under his Brooklyn Films banner alongside Highland Film Group’s Arianne Frasier, Delphine Perrier and Molly Hassell.

Highland Film Group is financing the project and will introduce it to international buyers in Cannes this week. CAA reps domestic rights.

Gere can next be seen in Oren Overman’s family drama “The Dinner,” alongside Steve Coogan, Chloe Sevigny, Rebecca Hall and Laura Linney. He is repped by Wme. Avnet is repped by CAA.

Naomi Watts, Jessica Lange to Star in ‘Secret Life of the Lonely Doll’

Naomi Watts and Jessica Lange will star in the independent drama “The Secret Life of the Lonely Doll” with Gia Coppola directing.

Indigenous Media, formed by Jon Avnet, Rodrigo Garcia and Jake Avnet will produce along Bruce Cohen (“American Beauty”) and Untitled Entertainment partner Jason Weinberg (“Ray Donovan”).

Coppola, who wrote and directed James Franco’s “Palo Alto,” will direct from a script by Merritt Johnson, whose credits include “Temple Grandin” and “In Treatment.”

“The Secret Life of the Lonely Doll” is the story of Dare Wright, who became well-known in the 1950s thanks to her best-selling children’s book “The Lonely Doll.” Journalist Jean Nathan found Wright living in a public hospital in Queens four decades later, and her book pieces together Wright’s bizarre life of glamour and isolation, and her struggle to escape her painful childhood through her art. Wright passed away in 2001 at the age of »

Fred Bernstein Launching Astute Films (Exclusive)

Veteran Hollywood executive Fred Bernstein has launched Los Angeles-based Astute Films as a motion picture financing and production company, Variety has learned.

Bernstein, who headed production at Columbia and Universal, has assembled an initial $50 million of private equity financing and is looking to back films with mid-range budgets rather than franchises.

“We’ll be very judicious and strategic as to our spending,” Bernstein told Variety.

The company has acquired movie rights to Albert French’s novel “Billy” and set up the project with Marty Davidson (“The Lords of Flatbush”), Wendell Pierce (Selma,” “Treme”) and Jerry Leider (“On the Road”) to produce with Davidson directing from his own script.

Set in rural Mississippi in 1947, the film depicts a racially-charged incident of taunting and bullying that results in the tragic death of a 14-year-old white girl at the hands of a 10-year-old black boy named Billy. The values of the community are »
