Detective Michael Madsen protects (and then some) possible murderess Laura Johnson
3 February 2016 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"To Kill For" (1992) aka "Fatal Instinct" showcases the talent of Michael Madsen as a detective. This picture is a neo-noir. It opens with a murder at an out-of-the-way resort motel in Beaumont, 40 miles east of Los Angeles, with impressive mountain views. Madsen finds few suspects at the upscale place except the owner, Laura Johnson, who has just settled in her house there, and a crusty manager. He's attracted to Johnson and soon finds that she's complex psychologically. He becomes involved with her even as he investigates.

I'd rate this at 5.5 if I could, indicating a watchable movie that's somewhat below par overall. It deserves a higher rating than the IMDb 4.0 at present.

The story is a bit lacking in complications, and that undermines the mystery of it. Standard police work is downplayed. The psychological matters and the sexual attraction of Madsen and Johnson compensate. But I would not say that this is an erotic thriller. There is some on screen sex here but not in great quantity and not sex for the sake of showing sex that usually prevails in the 90s erotic thrillers.

The biggest plus is Madsen's presence and performance, but Laura Johnson adds a great deal too. Madsen's strength as an actor is not so much in his physical presence as in his face, eyes, voice, delivery of lines hair and expressions. He has a rough and weathered quality like he's been around. Johnson is slim, sultry, flirtatious, clean-looking, vulnerable and sexy. Madsen thinks of her as "dangerous".
