This was the first "Ernest" movie, I think, that I watched and I was
surprised that it wasn't as stupid as I thought it was or the title
convinced me it would be. It really wasn't "stupid" until the last 20
minutes, but a lot of movies get really dumb in the last half hour.
For most of the movie, it was nice, lighthearted fun that - cliché
aside - is fun for the "whole family." There is nary a bad one word in
this movie and it's old-fashioned slapstick fun and about as innocent
as it gets.
Having said that, I realize a lot of people would still consider the
movie as a dumb one but I always liked Jim Varney and laughed at the
most of the stuff he did, beginning with those famous TV commercials of
his.
In the last 30 years, how many comedies do you see without a tons of
sex and profanity? Almost none......so give "Ernest" some slack.

I saw this movie on TV a couple years ago, but I didn't get to see the whole
thing because I had to go to that one place in the world that is most
pointless and very stupid----yes, school. But, when I saw it at the video
store a few days ago, I bought it. And this movie is seriously one of the
best comedies that are "so stupid, they're funny".
The late Jim Varney stars as Ernest as he tries to stop an evil Troll from
killing all of town's children. The movie begins with a montage of classic
horror film clips, some of which I recognized to be FRANKENSTEIN and the
1922 classic NOSFERATU. There are some scenes that might not be suitable for
children, but otherwise this hilariously funny romp is surely a movie that
everyone should watch. This film is a must-see for anyone who loves stupidly
funny comedies!
Sleep tight....ERNEST SCARED STUPID gets 4/5.

O.K. so this movie probably wasn't nominated for an Oscar for best original
screenplay. Or best of anything else for that matter. And the film is what
most folks would term "stupid" humor. So I like "stupid" humor, so sue me.
Jim Varney's creation of characters like Ernest and the myriad others he
pulled out of seeming thin air, in my opinion speak volumes of his talent
and creativity. Sometimes it's enough just to be entertained with belly
laughs and not stop and analyze every single line of dialog. If you're the
intellectual type, don't bother with this movie, it'll go way over your
head, or under your radar screen one. But if you're an otherwise
intelligent and reasonably good humored person, and especially if you're
looking for something that is decidedly NOT a gut-yanking, eyeball popping,
gorey screamfest to watch with your kids on Halloween, this is a fun and
easy on the brain flick.

bumbling idiot has to save the day this time from a bunch of trolls.
Sounds
like a cheap horror flick plot, but once you factor in Ernest......its non
stop side splitting Ernest P. Worrell action. I mean, it even has his
faithful dog Rimshot in it. You can't go wrong with that.

Ernest (Jim Varney) gets into trouble when he builds a treehouse for the
neighborhood kid and accidentally digs up an ugly, evil troll who hates
all
children and shows it by promptly turning the kids helping Ernest into
wooden sculptures. Ernest Scared Stupid is overall one of the better
Ernest
movies, I found it to be stupid and harmless Halloween
fun.

This is hands down the BEST "Ernest" film ever! In the movie lovable, idiot
Ernest P. Worrell accidently wakes up a troll who begins to abduct kids, and
turn them into wooden dolls for his evil plan. Of course in this kind of
case, our lovable dimwit has to stop the evil troll, and get him back to
where he belongs! Of course, in the process, there will be loads of mayhem,
and shear laugh riot scenes as well.
As I said before, this was the best "Ernest" film ever made (It even beat
out "Ernest Goes To Jail" which is my 2nd favorite "Ernest" film.). What was
really cool about this installment was how it had a horror movie look in a
way, but made it in an "Ernest" kind of way. Scary, and Hilarious at the
same time!!!
This film gets a perfect 10!!

a group of children around halloween, have their haunted house torn down
by
annoying, punk bullies. The ever likeable, knucklehead Ernest P. Worrel
decides to build a tree fort. On a tree where a troll's tomb lies! He
inadvertently releases the 200-year-old demon, that turns humans,
especially
children, into wooden dolls! The Trolls are slimy, malicious, sovereign
things. Quite a scary, dark comedy, where the troll is first seen in the
eerie, dark woods where it was released and lurks through the dark, and
even
pops out under a bed when it seems safe. None of the adults believe
Ernest
or the children untill the trolls terrorize the halloween party. Ernest
is
as dumb, and funny as usual. I even got scared watching from watching it
when it came out when I was 5. The movie is clearly a fantasy. Ernest
movies
were wacky and off-the-wall, but never had make-believe elements like
this,
it went against the grain and changed the theme. The last 25 minutes has
Ernest and the kids eliminating the trolls with...milk! ha hah!which
kindof
growsed me out a couple of shots, and the adults being dragged and
carried
around to be tortured and killed. But the last troll is indestructable,
and
allmighty, evil and powerful, not even milk stops him..it's up to Ernest
P.
Worrel to be the hero of his home town. The show's definently worth
watching.

Jim Vareny(Ernest P. Worrell) is a stupid fellow who just unleashed a
horror named Troll. This troll needs kids to bring his own army into
the world. Of course since Ernest is so dumb, no one believes him when
he says, "The trolls coming."
This is about the silliest series on the face of the planet. Jim Vareny
really does act stupid for these movies which will make us all laugh
undoubtedly. But don't be swayed. Just because it's silly doesn't mean
it isn't watchable. It is and more. Grab your kids, pop in the VHS or
DVD and let those laughs flow. Because when you watch this you'll find
not only a funny character in Ernest but a fine little excuse to say
"Family time."
delivers a wry performance as well. I guess now I am officially a
Jim Varney/Ernest fan. Enjoy!

Some comedies borderline stupidity, where you can admit to having guilty
pleasures watching it and you even catch yourself laughing frequently.
"Ernest Scared Stupid" is not one of these films (and for that matter,
neither are other films in this series, included but not limited to "Ernest
Saves Christmas," "Ernest Goes to Jail," and "Ernest Rides Again"). In fact,
this film doesn't borderline stupidity...it bathes in stupidity, drinks it,
eats it, and sleeps it. Essentially, the character of Ernest is a one-punch
gag which somehow evolved into a series of stupid, pointless movies which
glorify the redundant stupidity of a character who gives Jar Jar Binks a run
for his money on the "annoying-and-must-die-o-meter" (and I say this with
all due respect to the late Jim Varney, the very talented man playing Ernest
who demonstrated wonderful talent in films like "Toy Story"). I do not like
the Ernest films. Quite frankly, they are an insult to my intelligence. If
this was the purpose of these films, as some may argue, I'd rather be
entertained by smarter comedy than this, like the Marx Brothers or even the
Three Stooges, who at least had more sincerity and personality than,
well....this guy.
These reservations aside, I must make a point about this film. I believe
Roger Ebert made a statement in a review of "Dumb and Dumber" that some
films that are not funny at all will occassionally contain at least one
scene that it so funny, with timing so good, you are caught offguard and
find yourself laughing uncontrollably. Believe it or not, there is one scene
like that in this film. With a great buildup and a payoff that is absolutely
side-splitting, I am amazed how such smart comedy found its way into such a
stupid film, and it makes me wonder what, with better writing and more
personality, the Ernest films COULD have been.
The scene I am referring to towards the end, when Ernest and the evil troll
face each other. In an ancient book, the only way to kill the troll has
previously been revealed, but one of the letters is missing: he can only be
defeated by "mi*k." Now, all the viewers realize, from the clues dropped
throughout, that the word is milk, but Ernest, through the course of the
film, has a difficult time figuring out what the word could possibly be,
what with his limited intelligence and all. In any rate, when he and the
Troll finally spar off, Ernest pulls out of his pocket a container of
Bulgarian "Miak," and he exclaims, "EAT MIAK AND DIE!" The Troll's reaction
is of course confusion, and the timing of the scene and the way it was
played between the two characters made me laugh so hard, I thought I was
going to have a brain annurism.
Of course, it might have been only a lightly humorous scene, and the fact
that it was funny in such an awful film left a greater impact than it should
have. In any case, it remains Ernest's one good moment in his entire
career.
* out of ****, without that scene, it would have been less.

WARNING: POSSIBLE SPOILERS CONTAINED HEREIN. This is my first Ernest movie I've seen. I also confess that I am
37-years-old and I watched this movie by myself. That being said, I
enjoyed it immensely and yes, I did laugh out loud. The movie has
fun opening credits, some great troll monster costumes, and my
favorite parts were the one-liners and insults, such as "squid lips"
and "booger lips." Between the wonderful Halloween atmosphere,
some good spooky moments, and the loony humor, there is not a
dull moment in this entire movie- which is quite an accomplishment in and of itself, since I can't say that for alot of
movies. Besides Varney's enthusiastic performance, Ertha Kitt
delivers a wry performance as well. I guess now I am officially a
