Ernest Scared Stupid (1991) Poster

Trivia

Many people believe that the meme "Troll Face" came from this film. When Ernest is about to run over Trantor the troll, he says the line, "How about a bumper sandwich booger lips!" After this, he laughs and his face is what "Troll Face" is based on.
The emblem on the side of the Briarville police car reads "Ignoramus Ad Infinitum".

The Chiodo Brothers are credited with Special Effects for this film, who also made the 1988 cult film Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988). Look for Trolls in the finale that resemble Klowns, as well as the same spinning death effect.
The pizzas seen being thrown at the bullies who try to attack the kids' tree house are re-used props from "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze (1991)".

The last Ernest film to be released theatrically by Touchstone Pictures, this is because many kids found the film to be too scary. Many people agree that the thought of a troll stealing the souls of children, and the trolls deaths to be very disturbing. Though Slam Dunk Ernest (1995) did have release a video release from Touchstone four years later.

Director John Cherry kept the animatronic head for the main antagonist, Trantor the troll. He used to keep it in his office, but had since given it to his son to display.

Headstones are seen in this film's poster, but there is no cemetery in the film itself. It is speculated by fans that the antagonist Trantor the Troll was originally supposed to dig up dead children to feed his army, and Ernest was a caretaker for a cemetery. This theory hasn't been confirmed, but would seem likely.

It bares a few similarities with another live action Disney Halloween-themed family film, Hocus Pocus (1993). For example, the creepy historical introductions are followed by classroom scenes either a teacher or student narrating about the unpleasant events and its curses against the villagers. In addition, Kenny and Max both meet up against bullies from their school before they face paranormal foes (trolls and witches).

Ernest mentions Mr Potato Head. Jim Varney starred in Toy Story (1995) and Toy Story 2 (1999) which featured Mr Potato Head as one of it characters.
