Eline Vere is a neurotic young woman with a turbulent family. Eline is the victim of the narrow-mindedness which permeated The Hague at the beginning of the 19th century. In this film Kümel opposes magnificent images of the stiff, snow-covered with the colorful and vivid Brussels. Adaptation of Couperus' intriguing novel, Eline Vere. Written by Hannelore Goossens

Nice dresses, shame about the film
18 June 2001 | by (The Hague, Netherlands) – See all my reviews

This movie does not do justice to the beautiful book by Louis Couperus. Let that be said first and foremost. But even for those who have not read the book, Eline Vere is a tedious movie. The main reason for that is that the dialogues have been translated into normal Dutch with debilitating effect. And the acting is just abysmal. Marianne Basler is totally lost in this role. And as for Monique van der Ven, well she is the miscast of the millennium. She is far too common and low-brow to be able to pull off her role of a wealthy socialite. It all just goes to prove that it takes a hell of a lot more than carriages and costumes to make a good period film. My suggestion: rent ANY BBC costume drama series to see how it should be done. And find a translation for Eline Vere, a beautiful novel.
