Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead (1991) Poster

Trivia

Christina Applegate gained almost 10 pounds to play a 17-year-old teenager. She lost all of that weight soon after filming ended to continue her role on Married with Children (1987).
Production nearly stopped towards the end of shooting due to Christopher Pettiet's drug addiction, which was starting to get out of control. The producers cut a few of his scenes to keep the film on schedule.
The original title was "The Real World". It was changed to avoid confusion with the new MTV reality series, Real World (1992).
When the movie was released on video,it had a contest in which participants would answer a number of questions about the movie related to movie trivia, as well as rating various actors' performances. The winner, whose answers matched up the best with an official set, would win the babysitter's car (which stolen by the drag queens).
In one of the earlier script drafts, the babysitter's death was supposed to be a more elaborate story line: the Crandell children were all suspects, and they all had their reasons to kill her. Although certain scenes were scaled down, elements of their motives remain in the final cut of the film: Walter having to do a book report, Melissa forced to wear a dress, Zack losing Cynthia.
Two pictures of kids are on Sue Ellen's desk at work. One picture is of Melissa. The same picture was used in Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988).
David Duchovnys first movie role.
'Keith Coogan', who was 20, was told he was too old to play 15-year-old Kenny. He came back to the audition in "stoner apparel" and a wig, and got the part.
Christina Applegates first lead role. She was 19.
Jennifer Love Hewitt was originally cast as Melissa Crandell. She was forced to drop the role because the producers of Kids Incorporated (1984), would not let her out of her contract.
The original script was written with Winona Ryder in mind for the role of Sue Ellen Crandell. Justine Bateman was later cast as Sue Ellen but then left the project. Christina Applegate was cast after her Married with Children (1987) costar Ed O'Neill, who was friends with a producer of the film, gave her the script.
Filmed during the summer of 1990.
The second movie starring Keith Coogan about a group of kids being left with a babysitter. The first was "Adventures in Babysitting" (1987), opposite Elisabeth Shue.

This movie was slammed by the critics ( mostly for the dark comedy title) but has amassed a cult following over the years.

Keith Coogan is the son of Jackie Coogan, Uncle Fester on The Adams Family. Jackie Coogan was also the impetus for Coogan's Law, a law which protects child actors from being exploited by unethical parents, agents and show business producers. The law was passed when Coogan discovered, at age 21, after years of working in showbusiness, that his bank account had been completely depleted. All the money he had earned doing movies as a child were taken by his mother, who stated, unapologetically, "Any money Jackie made prior to the age of 21 is legally ours, we never promised him otherwise".
