I did not read the novel which this film is inspired from. The tale of a young prize fighter who prepares a world championship and whose path crosses a desperate young woman's one. A girl who seems to have escaped from some strange place where she was prisoner. A weird movie, I admit, which shows all the back stage of the boxing world or, may I say, underworld, with all his set ups - remember Bob Wise's masterpiece starring Robert Ryan, back in 1949. SET-UP, one of the best film ever made about boxing. Wadeck Stanczak gives here a brilliant performance as the lead character. This actor left the big screen too early, he was really gifted and he is now totally forgotten. But this movie is not only about hideous treachery in this underworld, some elements come into this scheme, and in an unusual way. Yves Boisset is really one of the best French director ever. One director who never gave any happy ending to any of his films. And this one makes no exception.
