Dito Montiel’s ‘Empire State’ Adds Several to Cast; Morris Chestnut An ‘Identity Thief’

24 May 2012 10:51 AM, PDT | The Film Stage | See recent The Film Stage news »

With Dwayne Johnson, Liam Hemsworth, and Emma Roberts seemingly ready to lead Empire State, Dito Montiel has started to track down supporting players in his real-life crime drama. Deadline has two reports on this front, telling us that Chris Diamantopoulos (The Three Stooges), Michael Angarano (Red State), Nikki Reed (Twilight), Jerry Ferrara (Entourage), and Paul Ben-Victor (The Wire) will all take some screen space. (It’s pointed out that Ben-Victor and Diamantopoulos have both played Moe Howard in the past. Trivia!)

Adam Mazer wrote the film, which centers on “two childhood friends from Astoria, N.Y., who plan to rob an armored car depository, with Johnson playing the NYPD detective out to bust them.” Diamantopoulos is the only one with a confirmed role, and it seems like a big one; he’ll play a mob boss who realizes that only two people committed a robbery, while everyone else thinks its a group of criminals. »

Blu-ray, DVD Release: 21 Jump Street

7 May 2012 10:04 AM, PDT | Disc Dish | See recent Disc Dish news »

Blu-ray & DVD Release Date: June 26, 2012

Price: DVD $30.99, Blu-ray $35.99

Studio: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

Another in Hollywood’s line of movie adaptations of older TV shows, 21 Jump Street brings the high school detectives to the present, with Channing Tatum (Haywire) and Jonah Hill (Moneyball) heading back to school to solve a crime.

In high school, Tatum and Hill were the jock and geek, respectively, but in Police Academy, they discover they’re better if they join forces. The unlikely pair of underachievers are assigned to blend in at a high school to bring down a synthetic drug ring. Things get complicated, however, when they mix up their identities during registration then start to enjoy their new school experiences.

The satire got good reviews from critics and moviegoers, calling it affectionate to the 1980s television series (and it does have a fun twist at the end in that vein).

'Firelight's' Cuba Gooding Jr. on that Jerry Maguire line: 'Own it, be proud of it and move on'

22 April 2012 1:00 PM, PDT | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Working with, and learning from, other established actors has proved useful for Cuba Gooding Jr.

The "Jerry Maguire" Oscar winner makes a rare television appearance Sunday, April 22, in ABC's fact-inspired new Hallmark Hall of Fame drama "Firelight."

In playing Dwayne "DJ" Johnson, a counselor at a correctional facility for young women, Gooding is teamed with a number of actresses just starting to make names for themselves ... a situation he says he knew how to handle from his experiences with such stars as Laurence Fishburne (in "Boyz N the Hood"), Dustin Hoffman ("Outbreak") and "Jerry Maguire" himself, Tom Cruise.

"They are real artists, and they allow you to create without stifling your creativity," Gooding tells Zap2it. "That was the main lesson I took from them. Making 'Outbreak' with Dustin and Morgan Freeman and Kevin Spacey, we really kind of sang when we were on the set together. It »

Terry McMillan: 'Mixed Feelings' About 'Waiting To Exhale' Sequel

16 April 2012 8:06 PM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

As previously reported, next month Terry McMillian is scheduled to participate in the upcoming Anguilla Literary Festival. In addition to celebrating various authors, the event also aims to influence aspiring authors with its informative workshops and empowering panel discussions.

During a recent interview with The Huffington Post, the former University of Arizona at Tucson English professor opened up on her involvement with the festive five-day event, her thoughts on Oprah Winfrey playing Whitney Houston's role in the sequel to "Waiting To Exhale" and her idea of a futuristic gang story hitting the silver screen.

How did you get involved with the Anguilla Literary Festival?

I was asked by Marva Allen [who owns Hue Man book store in Harlem], she and I are friends. And she was the one who mentioned it to me a while back, and I kind of lost the point that it's the very first literary conference [for the island]. But I'm excited! I think I'm going to teach a writing workshop. »

'Straight Outta Compton' Finds Director

11 April 2012 5:27 AM, PDT | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

"Straight Outta Compton" has found a director. It was announced on Tuesday that F. Gary Gray had beaten out names like John Singleton ("Boyz N The Hood"), George Tillman Jr. ("Notorious") and Elgin James ("Little Birds") for the chance to direct the N.W.A. bio film being set up at New Line.

Like Tillman's "Notorious" -- a wildly underrated classic about Notorious B.I.G. and not the Alfred Hitchcock thriller -- "Straight Outta Compton" will likely have a "Behind the Music" feel; the rap group N.W.A. (which stands for N----- With Attitude) rose to fame in the late '80s, but suffered the usual array of musical meltdowns and internal conflict.

No word yet on casting, but expect the process to be interesting: N.W.A. counted current superstars Ice Cube and Dr. Dre among its members, as well as Easy-e, the group founder who died of AIDS-related complications in 1995. Ice Cube is a producer on "Straight Outta Compton. »

Gary Gray has signed on as director, beating out notable names like Boyz N The Hood's John Singleton, Elgin James of Little Birds, and the genius behind the Notorious B.I.G. biopic, Notorious, George Tillman Jr.  F. Gary Gray has worked previously with the film's producer, Ice Cube, directing Friday and the music video for Cube's "It Was a Good Day." F Gary Gray in talks to direct Nwa biopic Straight Outta Compton

11 April 2012 4:51 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Law Abiding Citizen director has reportedly been recruited by producer and ex-nwa member Ice Cube to direct the story of the legendary rap group

Law Abiding Citizen's F Gary Gray looks set to take charge of the forthcoming Nwa biopic, Straight Outta Compton, about the pioneering La hip-hop outfit.

Deadline reports that Gray has been recruited by producer Ice Cube, one of the group's best-known members alongside Dr Dre, Eazy-e, Mc Ren and DJ Yella. Nwa were active between 1986 and 1991, a period in which rap evolved from the block party sound of the early 1980s into the more aggressive gangster rap. They were one of Los Angeles' earliest successful rap groups and are widely considered one of the most important outfits in the history of hip-hop.

The story of Nwa offers plenty of material for Hollywood to draw upon. Ice Cube departed the band in 1989 in a dispute over royalties, »

Movie Review - Rampart (2011)

Rampart, 2011.

Directed by Oren Moverman.

Starring Woody Harrelson, Ice Cube, Ned Beatty, Anne Heche, Cynthia Nixon, Brie Larson, Robin Wright, Steve Buscemi and Sigourney Weaver.

Synopsis:

In 1999 Los Angeles, veteran police officer Dave Brown (Woody Harrelson) - the last of a dying breed of Vietnam-vet ‘cowboy’ cops - struggles to survive amid accusations of police brutality, and an investigation into a shooting in the line of duty.

James Ellroy, the man responsible for writing L.A. Confidential, Street Kings and The Black Dahlia, brings his detailed knowledge of the L.A.P.D and the landscape of the City of Angels to Rampart. He contextualizes the political tension of the late 90s L.A., where racial prejudice embroils the ‘Rampart’ division – and particularly Dave Brown (Woody Harrelson). Brown is a department dinosaur, too hard headed and controversial to progress through the ranks. He’s stuck to his patrol car, overtly »

The 25 Most Essential '90s Movies

5 April 2012 9:00 AM, PDT | NextMovie | See recent NextMovie news »

There's a reason you've recently had the urge to bust out your plaid shirts, Celine Dion albums and dial-up modems, as this week sees the release of two relics of the 1990s: "Titanic 3D" and "American Reunion."

Since both of these movies make us think back to a more innocent time when Monica Lewinsky was an eager young White House intern, our money wasn't on fire and Twittering was a weird body tic, we're reminiscing about that decade's most influential and essential cinematic treasures for future generations. It wasn't easy to narrow down the list (next time, "Problem Child 2," next time ...) but if we were to preserve only 25 flicks from the '90s in a time capsule, they would be these (listed in alphabetical order).

In addition to his comedic work in "21 Jump Street," Ice Cube has been busy behind the camera, attempting to put two passion projects together as a producer.

In recent months, rumors have swirled about a fourth "Friday" movie and a biopic on the members of N.W.A. When MTV News' Josh Horowitz sat down with the rapper-turned-actor and producer, Cube offered an update on the latter.

Addressing rumors that his "Boyz n the Hood" director, John Singleton, could possibly helm the project based on the rap group, Ice Cube basically said that he couldn't say. "We're interviewing a lot of directors. I don't want to say 'ye' or 'nay,' but we're interviewing directors," he said. "So, »

Ice Cube On '21 Jump Street' And The Fight Between George Clooney and David O. Russell

6 March 2012 10:34 AM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

When I was a freshman in high school, I begged my parents to buy me N.W.A's "Straight Outta Compton." At the time, the only other rap album I owned was "I'm the D.J., He's the Rapper" by D.J. Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince. The continuous loop of "Parents Just Don't Understand" that played in my bedroom was then replaced by "F-ck tha Police" (played very softly so my parents couldn't hear it, I should add). When Ice Cube was recording those lyrics, as we discuss, he was fairly certain that Midwestern suburban white kids would never get a chance to hear them.

Ice Cube co-stars in the Jonah Hill-Channing Tatum comedy, "21 Jump Street," as Captain Dickson -- a character that owns every stereotype of a fictional police captain, but also realizes that he owns those stereotypes. I chatted with a surprisingly poignant Ice Cube (surprising, »

Cuba Gooding Jr. on life after Oscar: 'I wouldn't change anything'

Cuba Gooding Jr. recalls the night he won his Oscar as "transformative."

Fifteen years ago, the performer who added "Show me the money!" to the list of legendary movie lines gave an acceptance speech with all the energy of his "Jerry Maguire" character -- Rod Tidwell, the arrogant football player steered toward bigger bucks by the title sports agent (Tom Cruise) -- when he accepted his Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the 1996 comedy-drama.

"I look back at it in the obvious, positive way," Gooding tells Zap2it, "with all the prestige and the opportunity that came with it, but also in a negative way. Before that, I was never asked, 'What do you want to do?' It was always like, 'Here's your assignment.' I'd started in theater, doing 'L'il Abner' in the morning and 'Twelfth Night' at night.

Mooz-Lum starring Danny Glover: portraying Muslims in a positive light

Qasim Basir grew up in a world filled with prejudice. A world where Muslims were victimised and negatively portrayed. The tragic events on September 11, 2001 didn.t exactly help matters either.

.All I ever see in the media or all I have ever seen in the media was this negative portrayal of Muslims in America and around the world,. Basir says to If during a visit to Australia late last year.

.I.ve been around Muslims my whole life . and I.ve never seen the version the media puts out there. It.s not to say that all Muslim people are great because that.s not the case . there are people out there doing some horrible things but it.s a very, very small minority.

.And so I just wanted to put a story out there that showed a more human version of the people . show something more accurate..

Abduction – DVD Review

Nathan (Taylor Lautner) is a relatively regular kid, about to finish high school, a bit of a thrill-seeker and seeing a therapist due to ill-defined anger management issues from his early teens. He is paired up with his friend and neighbour Karen (Lily Collins) for a school project, through which they find themselves scanning through a website detailing children who have disappeared. Nathan notices an uncanny resemblance between himself and one of those children, which serves as a catalyst for the murder of the people he believed to be his parents, sending him on the run with the CIA and a Serbian secret agent on his tail, while he tries to figure out who he really is and what has become of his real parents.

To get the obvious out of the way first thing, Taylor Lautner is no great shakes as an actor. His relative youth was a serviceable excuse for Sharkboy & Lava Girl, »

Abduction, 2011.

Directed by John Singleton.

Starring Taylor Lautner, Lily Collins, Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Maria Bello, Michael Nyqvist, and Alfred Molina.

Synopsis:

A youth discovers that the people who raised him aren't his real parents, a revalation that leaves him running for his life.

Abduction is the one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. The acting is horrendous, the direction is stilted and devoid of style, the scripts is laughable, and I actually mean you will laugh out loud when you see it because of the horrendously bad dialogue e.g. “I just saw my parents get murdered in front of my own eyes.”

But I had a hell of a lot of fun watching it.

I think it’s really important to first talk about those involved and how they sold out to star alongside the dog from Twilight. John Singleton directs Abduction – yes, the Oscar-nominated director of Boyz n the Hood. »

When director Ernest Dickerson released "Juice" on January 17, 1992, he effectively changed hip-hop's relationship with Hollywood. Twenty years later, "RapFix Live" will celebrate the game-changing movie on Wednesday with co-star Khalil Kain and Naughty by Nature, the hip-hop trio who contributed to the soundtrack.

Starring Kain, Omar Epps, Samuel L. Jackson and Tupac Shakur in his first starring role, "Juice" told the story of four Harlem youths who try desperately to overcome the treacherous pull of the streets. Though Tupac had a cameo in 1991's "Nothing But Trouble," his true acting debut came when he first put his acting chops on display playing the maniacal Bishop. Co-star Kain played the more level-headed Raheem Porter.

Before "Juice," there weren't many movies that effectively captured the harsh realities of the inner-city ghettos. With »
