Quotes

William Karp: Lisa, can you tell me something? Why do you think it is he chose you to attack?
Lisa Roberts: I have no idea.
William Karp: Now didn't you tell us you were raped 6 months ago?
Lisa Roberts: Yes. But I don't see what that has to do...
William Karp: Lisa, what does that say to you?
Lisa Roberts: What do you mean, what does that say to me?
William Karp: What does that say to you?
Lisa Roberts: [no response]
William Karp: I'll tell you what it says to me. It says there's a pattern here. A first-time victim becomes a second-time victim, and a second-time victim often becomes a third. We see it all the time. ...

Should Courteney Cox trust the convict or the cop?
11 September 2012 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Tight and plausible enough crime thriller has Courteney Cox seeking the repose of a desert location and small town after being raped in New York City. Instead she runs into nothing but trouble in this above-par story that is equally well-acted and well-directed.

The sheriff is played by D.B. Sweeney, whom I remember from the 1987 No Man's Land. His laid back style works better in this one. The convict is Craig Sheffer, and he creates a complex person for us on the screen, moreso than anyone else. Ms. Cox does a fine job, without getting hysterical, of a woman given conflicting information and not knowing exactly whom to trust. And neither do we, although we have our suspicions, until we receive one critical piece of information in a telephone call.

Ms. Cox has been weakened by her earlier encounter back east, and now she is untrusting of men but also prone to be manipulated. Before she knows it, she's thrust into some dangerous situations and she finds it hard to leave the town. Having just watched and reviewed Blue Steel from 2 years earlier, there is a definite parallel in which the female lead doesn't have the evidence to move forward. But I find this story much more tightly woven and plausible.
