This movie was one of the many out-dated kiddie movies in the dinky video store near my house. But it was one of my favorites. The movie starts out with neat old-school outer space scenes with a very darling Sebastian Star Bear theme song. Then we hear of the Star Bears, special noble bears who were selected by the Great Bear to live in the heavens, and watch over and protect the bears on Earth.
"Sebastian Star Bear: The First Mission" tells the story of poor little Grizzelda, a young grizzly bear, whose mother is captured for a dancing bear show. Grizzelda, alone and scared, wishes for a Star Bear to help her rescue her mother, and lo and behold, Sebastian arrives!
While the animation quality isn't really sparkling, some of the character and plot development is. The character of Sebastian Star Bear himself is very dashing and heroic, with a cutely non-geocentric naivete. The partnership between Sebastian and his robot counterpart Souki is very touching and beautiful.
It at times is plodding and tedious, but "Sebastian Star Bear" also has its beautiful moments.
