'The Addams Family' Heads To Broadway -- Which Other Classic Shows Should Follow Suit?

Maybe I've been living under a rock, but count this as breaking news for at least one reporter — there is an "Addams Family" musical on its way to Broadway.
Variety reports that Jerry Zaks has been hired as a creative consultant to rework "The Addams Family," which is described as a "Broadway-bound tuner." In other words, a musical. In other words, amazing.
It's hard to determine whether or not a musical adaptation of the classic television series (and hilarious film franchise) is a ridiculously stupid idea or a ridiculously great one. Depending on the execution, it really could go either way. One thing is for sure — the idea of adapting classic TV shows as Broadway musicals is an interesting one. I wonder how well it would work for some other old school shows...

Did the entertainer intend to emulate the scary little girl from The Ring or Cousin Itt from The Addams Family when she wore this dress of tresses?
That's just one of the many riddles surrounding fashion's most infamous joker. (Other unanswered questions include: Does she have the hots for men or women…or both? Why is she so obsessed with Kermit the Frog? How does she keep from walking into walls when her entire face is covered?)

In the past week, two new shows have opened in New York City: A Little Night Music, a musical revival starring Angela Lansbury and Catherine Zeta-Jones (at left), and The Orphans Home Cycle, Part 2 -- The Story of a Marriage. EW reviewers enjoyed both of them. Thom Geier gave A Little Night Music a B+ and said that star Zeta-Jones comfortably commanded the stage "as if it were just another red carpet to be conquered." Meanwhile, Melissa Rose Bernardo also gave The Orphans Home Cycle, Part 2 -- The Story of a Marriage a B+ and made the powerful proclamation that

Saved by the Bell Might Finally Get the Big Screen Treatment

It's quite surprising that after turning older television shows like Charlie's Angels, Get Smart, The Addams Family into feature films, many of the sitcoms and series from the 90's have remained largely untouched by the property grabbing hands of Hollywood. That has the potential to change soon as Pajiba reports that a Saved by the Bell movie is in the works. And while there's certainly some interest in revisiting Bayside High School (especially from Jimmy Fallon), the film itself would more than likely have an all-new cast with the possibility of cameos from the original cast members. But does anyone want to see this show as a movie?
However, I'm not sure if an "all-new cast" means that it will simply have new actors playing Bayside High School's finest. If you're too young to remember the 90's series or just never cared enough to watch, the show aired between 1989 and

Barry Sonnenfeld to Direct Gil's All Fright Diner for DreamWorks

Nothing like taking the kitchen sink approach to a project, which is what it sounds like A. Lee Martinez did when writing the novel Gil's All Fright Diner about a vampire and werewolf who team up to fight zombies after stopping at a diner in the desert that is a conduit for the supernatural.
Now, thanks to the success of The Twilight Saga, of course any project that even hints at a vamp/lycan collaboration is a hot ticket, so DreamWorks Animation has snapped up Kung Fu Panda scribes Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris to write an adaptation of Gil's All Fright Diner.
Barry Sonnenfeld (The Addams Family/Addams Family Values) is attached to direct.
According to Variety there's an odd couple aspect of the story [about] this vampire and werewolf who team to save the world from an ancient demon and his modern ally, a high school cheerleader who wants to be famous.

The past week saw the opening of two new shows in New York City. The first is a new play from David Mamet, Race, which EW critic Lisa Schwarzbaum awarded a C grade and called "a four-person dramatic tap dance about the lies blacks and whites tell each other about each other." The other—without a doubt, much lighter fare—is a lost backstage play called So Help Me God starring Kristen Johnston that EW's Jessica Shaw gave a B, commenting that "Johnston seems to relish every second" of her time on stage, "strutting around the stage in diva-worthy capes and lacy gowns,

Stage fans, we find ourselves on a weekend where lots of the star-driven shows on the boards -- ranging from Oleanna and After Miss Julie to A Steady Rain and Hamlet -- are set to close. Single tear. But, never fear! A handful of great new shows have opened in the last week, too, so you're covered. Reviews of five new shows went up on EW.com this week: our critics' takes on the touring production of The 101 Dalmatians Musical (B-); and off-Broadway entries The Brother/Sister Plays (A), This (B+), The Heart is a Lonely Hunter (C+), and A Streetcar Named Desire

Also this week, the booty-shaking biographical Afrobeat musical Fela! It was a busy week on the boards. Sunday saw the opening of a Broadway revival of the musical Ragtime (pictured right), which EW's Melissa Rose Bernardo calls "dazzling" and gives an A. Also on Broadway, Sarah Ruhl's provocatively titled comic play In the Next Room, or the Vibrator Play opened to a decidedly lukewarm review from yours truly: "Ruhl's play could have benefited from a broader, farcical touch." Elsewhere on Broadway, the Julia Stiles-Bill Pullman revival of David Mamet's Oleanna announced plans to close on Jan. 3.

Nathan Lane and Bebe Neuwirth star as Gomez and Morticia in The Addams Family, a new musical about the famously creepy family (now in Chicago until Jan. 10, then opening on Broadway April 8.) To develop his own take on the character of Gomez (famously played by Raul Julia in the 90s movies and John Astin in the 60s TV show), Lane dissected clues provided by the show's script, which is based on the original New Yorker cartoons penned by Charles Addams. " obviously has family money, and he doesn't have to work. So he has time for things like the tango and sword fighting.

We first discussed the new Broadway musical version of The Addams Family back in June 2007. Though the creators said that they intended to base it on the New Yorker cartoons, there are bound to be lots similarities to the classic TV show.
As expected, Nathan Lane (The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd) is playing creepy patriarch Gomez and Bebe Neuwirth (Cheers) is embodying his ever-enchanting wife, Morticia.
Rounding out the family are Kevin Chamberlain (Heroes) as Uncle Fester, Jackie Hoffman (Dilbert) as Grandma, Adam Riegler as son Puglsey, Krysta Rodriguez as daughter Wednesday, and Zachary James as Lurch, the giant butler.
The show is currently playing in Chicago for its out-of-town premiere and is expected to kick off its Broadway run on March 2nd.

The Addams Family's latest incarnation is a Broadway musical

The Addams Family is coming back. No, this times it's not a TV series, nor a motion picture. No, this time Broadway is taking Charles Addams' amazing dysfunctional gothic family and putting their antics to music. That's right, The Addams Family is becoming a Broadway musical.
One of the things that sounds really promising about the musical is the casting. The two leads seem perfect for their roles -- Nathan Lane as Gomez and Bebe Neuwirth as Morticia. They're both like cartoon characters already, and in that bizarro world, they should be right at home. Hams on parade ... with music! It sounds glorious.

As James Hibberd reports: "That's 24% higher than the Emmys this year and up slightly from last year's CMAs. ABC won the night, its three-hour telecast leading every time slot with the network's biggest non-sports Wednesday audience in more than four years." Melissa Bernardo gave a B+ to The Understudy but dinged it for the cast's somewhat mixed on-stage chemistry. Thom Geier calls Idiot Savant "one strange, head-scratching evening" and gives it a C+. As for Lynn Redgrave's one-woman show, Nightingale, I gave it a C and took issue with the production because "the

Another classic cartoon is getting ready for the feature treatment. This time, it's your friendly neighborhood bears. USA Today reports that Shawn Levy (director of the Night at the Museum flicks) is gearing up to produce The Berenstain Bears into a feature comedy with Walden Media. This cartoon family has been around since 1962, and have had a handful of television specials, a series in the mid-80s, and another in 2003.
But, like anything Hollywood, the family is getting updated. They won't just live in Bear Country this time around. Levy is planning a mix of live action and computer animation where "the comedy comes from this bear family coexisting in a more recognizably real world." That means updates on mom's polka dots, dad's overalls, and, presumably, interaction with humans. The plan is to incorporate details from popular books in the series, and Walden Media CEO Michael Bostick compares the clan

This week saw the opening of two new Broadway productions, both revivals: The Neil Simon Plays: Brighton Beach Memoirs, a comedy-drama starring former Roseanne star Laurie Metcalf (left), which I described as "a fine revival, easily the best show of a young Broadway season," and the musical Finian's Rainbow, which Tanner Stransky called "an odd, farcical muscial" that is "well cast and smartly performed."
