Storyline

When Ren, a young son of a lighthouse keeper, rescues a stranger foundering in the rocks near his home, he learns the man was an aide to his true father, a great king. Ren is given a magic compass crystal that guides him to a dragon who shows him that the only way to claim his heritage is to find the Thirteen Treasures of Rule. Unfortunately, a pirate ship captained by the evil Bloth is also aware of this treasure and is relentlessly pursuing Ren for it. On his side, Ren soon acquires companions like Ioz the Pirate, Tula the Eco-Mage and Nibbler the Monkey Bird who help him in his quest. That quest becomes all the more urgent when Ren learns that the Dark Water, a carnivorous form of water that consumes anything it snares, threatens to envelope and destroy his world and only the treasures he seeks can stop it. Trivia

Due to the good ratings this show received, the producers of this show decided to extend the adventures by finding fewer treasures per season compared to first and second seasons. While working on the third season (Episode "The Dark Disciples" to "The Living Treasure"), Fil-Cartoons (Overseas Animation studio) had some difficulties with animating the last 4 episodes (Episode "The Pandawa Plague" - "The Living Treasure") of this show. This caused problems for Hanna Barbera animation studio, because the episodes were coming in late. This prevented the show from meeting the air dates. This led to the cancellation of the show in November/December 1992. The last 4 episodes were finished and aired 6 months later (May 1993). But by that time, most of the crew of this show were already in the middle of the production of SWAT Kats and Cos Anzilotti (Producer of this show's third season) was already in the middle of the production of Captain Planet. Due to the failing of meeting the air dates, Jayne Barbera was replaced by Catherine Winder as "Executive in Charge of Production" for later Hanna Barbera shows like SWAT Kats and 2 Stupid Dogs. User Reviews

one of the best
4 September 2005 | by (Albuquerque, USA) – See all my reviews

I rented this on VHS, then bought the toys, then collected the comics, it was so good. I never knew there was a TV show until after it was gone and unavailable. I'd buy it on DVD in a second.

The concept was fairly unique, dark water taking over the world and the hero going on a quest for magical items to stop its progress. It was like a fantasy take on pirates of the Spanish Main. The ships had really neat concepts, like the hero's ship which could glide for short distances, gigantic waterfalls in the ocean, and some sort of gas gun that worked by stimulating a living creature to produce knockout gas. The main bad guy, Bloth, had a ship which was actually a gargantuan carcass of a long dead sea creature, so it looked cool as well.

It had the same set of characters as a lot of fantasy films, close to Star Wars, but the characters were amazingly three dimensional for a cartoon. Niddler was likable, but you were never sure he would be on your side when the going got rough, and not in a typical cowardly save-his-own-skin type of way, but a maybe-he-really-is-evil type of way.
