When Ren, a young son of a lighthouse keeper, rescues a stranger foundering in the rocks near his home, he learns the man was an aide to his true father, a great king. Ren is given a magic compass crystal that guides him to a dragon who shows him that the only way to claim his heritage is to find the Thirteen Treasures of Rule. Unfortunately, a pirate ship captained by the evil Bloth is also aware of this treasure and is relentlessly pursuing Ren for it. On his side, Ren soon acquires companions like Ioz the Pirate, Tula the Eco-Mage and Nibbler the Monkey Bird who help him in his quest. That quest becomes all the more urgent when Ren learns that the Dark Water, a carnivorous form of water that consumes anything it snares, threatens to envelope and destroy his world and only the treasures he seeks can stop it. Due to the good ratings this show received, the producers of this show decided to extend the adventures by finding fewer treasures per season compared to first and second seasons. While working on the third season (Episode "The Dark Disciples" to "The Living Treasure"), Fil-Cartoons (Overseas Animation studio) had some difficulties with animating the last 4 episodes (Episode "The Pandawa Plague" - "The Living Treasure") of this show. This caused problems for Hanna Barbera animation studio, because the episodes were coming in late. This prevented the show from meeting the air dates. This led to the cancellation of the show in November/December 1992. The last 4 episodes were finished and aired 6 months later (May 1993). But by that time, most of the crew of this show were already in the middle of the production of SWAT Kats and Cos Anzilotti (Producer of this show's third season) was already in the middle of the production of Captain Planet. Due to the failing of meeting the air dates, Jayne Barbera was replaced by Catherine Winder as "Executive in Charge of Production" for later Hanna Barbera shows like SWAT Kats and 2 Stupid Dogs. This was a wonderfully imaginative cartoon. The camaraderie between the three main characters was reminiscent of Luke, Han and Leia in Star Wars. Bloth was a great villain, part Captain Hook, part Jabba the Hutt.
