Trivia

On the wall of Drexell's classroom a progression of American flags is shown from 1776 to the year 2000. The year 2000 shows a flag of Japan. This raised a tremendous controversy with World War II veterans groups who claimed that, even in jest, it was in very poor taste. See more »

What happened to Otis Drexell?
25 November 2003 | by See all my reviews

I remember watching this show, I have always been a big fan of character actor Dabney Coleman, and I thought he was funny here. Now I will admit I was real young when I watched it and I thought it was real funny. In this show appropriately enough brash con-artist Dabney Coleman was an elementary school teacher who was a former criminal.

As was many FOX shows at the time it was very interesting. He would play scams on his students, scam with his students, and would always argue with his principals. When I was young I thought this was great. I am older now and a lot of people I know did not like this show. I thought it was funny, and I would like to see it again to see if it was as funny as I remember it to be.

The supporting cast was capable. Character actor Dakin Matthews was excellent as a much more prim and proper teacher with better students, while Cleavant Derricks was the Physical Education teacher, and one of Drexell's best friends. I suppose the problem with the show was the format changed to much.

The show went from a classroom comedy to a home comedy with the action shifting to Drexell's home life more and to one of Drexell's daughter's boyfriends, Slash. The classroom was funnier, and it should of stayed there. Still the show had some funny moments. Also of note Jason Biggs got his start here, and I first saw Brittany Murphy on this show. I would like to see this show again just for kicks anyway.
