Storyline

Dwight Davis, a widower and grammar school principal, has the task of raising his three sons, along with the help of his wacky father Gunny. After the series moved from ABC to CBS, the oldest son and his friend were dropped and Dwight's sister was added. Also off the show was Dwight's love interest, Cosmo, who left to join a convent. Added as well was Skinner, a son of some of Dwight's college pals who moved in. It was explained Skinner's parents were psychologists working in Latin America. Also the oldest son was said to have become a foreign exchange student. Appearing occasionally was Dwight's love interest Erika. Written by Tony Meier <discokid@aol.com>

Just a appreciation, not a review
6 March 2001 | by (Boca Raton, FL) – See all my reviews

I loved this show. The feeling of family was so real. The characters were so not cookie cutter. The sense of the Northwest, even for such a cheesily produced program as a sitcom, was palpable. Dennis Quaid was solid, yet wacky. I fell in love with Patricia Cookson at once. When they added Bonnie Hunt, I fell even more in love with the show. Even the kids were terrific, and I hate kids. Best of all, Jonathan Winters was given the freedom to be both Gunny Davis and whoever the gunny thought he ought to be, at any given moment. A rich wonderful rewarding experience!
