Storyline

Diane, a young woman growing up in Australia in the mid 1960s, walks away from her fiancé to join a convent after being sure she has a calling to the faith. The Catholic Church and its followers are struggling with huge changes. The Pope has died, there is war in Vietnam and mandatory conscription, there is the Vatican controversy on abortion and contraception, and the changing face of the Church as a whole. Told in six parts, Diane faces her own demons and has to finally decide if she can teach what the Church preaches, or if it's simply impossible for her to reconcile all the contradictions of the faith and uphold her vow of obedience. Quotes

Diane: For various reasons I did not keep a journal while I was in the convent, so I have to piece this one together from memory. The result is probably more balanced and forgiving than I knew how to be at the time, so I have decided to dedicate it to Saint Anselm, all of the philosophers, and a few other beginning with "A." I doubt if Sister Patti would have had much time for me leaving the convent. She used to say, "You can peel the skin off of an onion but what difference did it make? Inside of ...

Very Interesting and Moving
6 October 1999 | by (Perth, Australia) – See all my reviews

I really enjoyed 'Brides of Christ'. I first saw it a few years ago when I had to study it at school, and even though you are not really supposed to enjoy school texts I liked it. I have since watched it several times. The film which is really a short series gives you an insight into the director's version of how nuns and Catholics lived in the 60s. I actually liked nuns for nearly the first time (I liked them in Sound of Music).

The actors are excellent, and the movie gives you a wonderful cross-section of styles of people that are portrayed. I understand that this film caused a bit of trouble because of its views, and the fact that it deals with some sensitive issues, but it is well worth watching. It deals with 'ordinary person' issues as well as Catholic ones. I would recommend it to just about anyone.
