The weekly adventures of Marty and Doc, 20 October 1999
Author:

This little animated series came about a year after the third movie, either an attempt to keep Back to the Future in the public eye or just to cash in on the films. Either way, this was a fun series. Some of the stories were very fresh and clever. One story that comes to mind is Doc, Jules and Verne traveling back and accidently preventing the extinction of the dinosaurs. Those live action bumpers of Christopher Lloyd are clever and funny. The series vanished after it's production ended and has sometimes appeared on a cable station. Watch it if you can.

Not as good as the movies, but still entertaining., 13 August 2001

While this animated series if BACK TO THE FUTURE is not as good as the BACK TO THE FUTURE movies, it is still entertaining! It's pretty good for an animated show from 1991, but the animated shows today are better. This is one of the few animated shows from the early 1990's that doesn't make me groan.

PLOT SPOILERS.
Following on from Back to the Future Part III, this animated series
continues the adventures of Marty McFly, Doc Brown and his family, and
other residents of Hill Valley. It's now 1991 and the Browns - Doc,
wife Clara, sons Jules and Verne and dog Einstein - have moved back to
the 20th Century. Marty is still dating Jennifer Parker and the two are
now in college, but their time travel adventures haven't stopped! Using
the new DeLorean and the time train, both of which now can travel
through space as well as time, our time travellers explore the past and
future, whilst trying not to get into trouble with the various Tannens
throughout history! I haven't seen every episode of this series (I've
seen 14 out of the 26 episodes made), but from what I have seen so far
the series is quite good. For a movie spin-off series, it stays
familiar to the original films (unlike some other series from this
time) and the characters we know and love from the films transfer well
to the series. The animation is mostly of a good standard, and although
there are some animation mistakes (as in every series!) it looks
visually good, with some good backgrounds. The characters look like
their film counterparts, except for Jennifer who for some reason has
gone blonde, and Biff who does not look like the 54 year old man he
should be by 1991 (here, he looks more like his 18 year old self from
1955). Most of the time the characters act like they did in the films,
although some BTTF fans might be slightly annoyed that the main focus
of the series is on Jules and Verne rather than Marty and Doc (some
episodes do not feature Marty at all). Marty sometimes acts a bit
stupider than he was in the films - luckily, moments like this are
rare.
Tom Wilson and Mary Steenburgen reprise their roles as Biff Tannen and
Clara Brown respectively from the films, and Christopher Lloyd plays
Doc in live action sequences beginning and ending each episode,
although he does not voice the animated Doc for some reason. Dan
Castellaneta, who voices Doc, does a very good imitation though. David
Kaufman takes over from Michael J Fox as the voice of Marty, and
although his voice isn't *exact*, it is still close enough, although
there were times when I thought he didn't sound like Fox that much. The
voices of Jules and Verne (neither of whom spoke in their one scene in
Part III) are spot-on, with extra praise for Troy Davidson who voices
Verne.
Now, onto the episodes. These do vary in quality. Some are very good.
Others are not so good. The best episodes in my opinion are those where
the time travellers go to some time and end up changing history, and
have to change it back (my favourite episode, "Go Fly A Kite", deals
with this - in this episode Verne accidentally interferes with Benjamin
Franklin's famous "Kite" experiment.). A few episodes did not involve
time travel, and in my opinion these were the weakest. However, every
episode that I have seen so far has had a few moments that made me
laugh or smile, or a line that was funny.
Overall, not a bad series, that although not as good as the films, and
despite many continuity flaws (for instance, in the films Doc was 65 in
1985, but according to the series he was 4 in 1926...), still manages
to entertain and occasionally educate as well. There were some very
good episodes in the series, and a few not-so-good ones, but every
episode is worth watching at least once. Luckily, most of them can be
watched again and again and can still entertain. 7.5/10.

[MAY BE SPOILERS]
The hit movies Back to the Future I-III is now a TV
series!
Marty McFly and Doc Emmet Brown are cartoon characters and have
many
more time traveling adventures. Doc's wife Clara Clayton is here and
so
are their children Jules and Verne and Doc's dog Einstein. Marty,
Doc
and the gang have all sorts of adventures, like the time Doc takes
his
family back to ancient England and they become enslaved by one of
Biff
Tannen's peabrained ancestors while Doc must face him in a
jousting
match. Yeah, Tannen as well as McFly descendants are plentiful. Doc
and
Marty find them wherever they go! Or how about the one where Marty
goes
to Salem, Massachusettes in the 1600's to rescue Doc and Goodman
Tannen
thinks he's a witch. Or how about the time Jules and Verne go way
back
to the age of dinosaurs and bring back an egg which hatches and
causes
havoc on the town? Even once Marty disrupted the meeting of
Clara's
parents. Sound familiar? They've even gone to the future in
one
episode. It was to 2091. Doc must have repaired the DeLorean
time
machine because as we know it was destroyed in Back to the Future
III.
But he's also got his steam engine time machine!
The original Doc Brown, Christopher Lloyd, appears
in
live-action bumpers to either introduce the episode or teach us a
new
science experiment we can try at home. His assistant is Bill Nye
who
would later get his own show. But for some reason Lloyd doesn't
do
Doc's voice. Dan Castellaneta does, but he's still pretty good.
David
Kaufman is Marty, Thomas F. Wilson is Biff, and Mary Steenbergen
is
Clara. Back to the Future ended it's run of 26 episodes in 1992
and
pretty much disappeared. But now, 2003, it has returned to TV! It's
on
the Fox Box! I recommend you tune in! Also, as long as you're
watching
Fox Box, watch Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Another rockin'
show!
Beats that Jap crap any day!

this is a great cartoon, I really enjoyed it, I am a big fan of Back To The Future it's my top favorite movie of all time, so I am inclined to like this, but it's very enjoyable and good for the kids, I like the parts with Dr Brown I think they're interesting and funny,Sad that this show is unavailable on DVD along with some other shows I loved like The Wonder Years, and China Beach.I just keep waiting for them to get caught up to these shows and release them. I am happy to find all 26 episode on you tube some of the quality is not that great but hopefully it is released on DVD. 1. Back to The Future 2. Return of The Living Dead 3. The Crow 4. Robocop 5. Batman 1989 my top 5 movies of all time.

A kiddified version of the great movie series, this has its moments but it's not worthy of the title. The set-up's not bad: Doc, Clara and family living in present day Hill Valley with a new fold-away Delorean and the steam train, now equipped for travel through space as well as time, in the garage. The character designs are pretty spot-on, too. Unfortunately the cartoon itself is poorly animated, full of unfunny slapstick routines and childish humour, sidelines Marty, and is backed up by a score that sounds like muzak. Worst of all is the inclusion of live action segments featuring Christopher Lloyd (presumably lured in by the involvement of Bob Gale). Unfunny, pointlessly educational and somewhat embarrassing, they make the animated sections look good. As a Saturday morning cartoon this is par for the course. But as 'Back to the Future'? Forget it.

As some people know "Back to the Future" the Animated series is airing
currently on the Fox Box or the Fox channel for those who are not familier
with it. It is a great follow up to the movies which I love. You can catch
it at 8:30 am on the Fox channel.
Were Back!
