Charlton Heston, Oliver Reed and Christopher Lee previously appeared together in The Three Musketeers (1973). Both films were later remade by the Walt Disney Company: The Three Musketeers (1993) and Muppet Treasure Island (1996). In both films, Heston's role was played by Tim Curry.

Director Fraser C. Heston played the younger version of his father's (Charlton Heston) character Moses in The Ten Commandments (1956). Cast member Christian Bale went on to play Moses in Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014).

In the DVD director's commentary, Fraser Heston says that they were not able to show Long John Silver's parrot on his shoulder as often as they would have liked because the bird tended to nibble on Charlton Heston's ear.
