The 1990 adaption is almost a line-for-line adaption of Stevenson's book, and is widely considered the best film/TV adaption of Treasure Island ever made. There are a few tiny changes, such as Jim getting his trademark flintlock pistol from Bones' sea chest, rather than his cowardly neighbors, but overall, if you're looking for a movie version of Treasure Island that is true to the book, you won't go wrong here.

J. Flint - Captain

John Silver - Quartermaster

William Bones - First Mate

Israel Hands - Gunner

Reasons have been disputed. Some believe it's because of his tall bearing, but John Silver's nickname may have more sinister undertones.

Human flesh is often referred to as "long pork." Although it is never mentioned, Silver's nickname could be a hint that he has practiced cannibalism in the past.
