Storyline

Ivan is old Russia: thick, dour, hard-working, often brutish; he misses Communism. He drives a taxi and one night meets Alexi, a new Russian, a musician, an alcoholic, irresponsible. Alexi stiffs Ivan for the fare, so Ivan tracks him down and a love-hate relationship ensues. When Alexi lets the bath water run over in Ivan's flat and Ivan must pay 500 rubles for repairs, he tries to force Alexi into day labor to repay him. It's hopeless. Then, suddenly, Alexi is discovered, goes on a jazz tour of America, becomes a celebrity, and returns in triumph. Ivan longs to renew the friendship, and it looks as if he may get what he wants. The acting is extraordinary. We watch two polar opposites - a sullen jock-type cabbie and an eccentric wino saxophonist - stumble through the streets of Moscow, each coping with life in his own way. The cabbie is facing the existential dilemma of his life, as the world of "artsy fags" (what he sees the wino as) both annoys him and draws him in. As for the saxophonist, he is dying to live to the fullest, always drunk, debaucherous, and struggling to get more out of the depressive and decaying urban fabric. He is feeling the same way other broke bohemians like him must have felt, from Van Gogh to Henry Miller to Jim Morrison, expressing fantastic views of the miserable and cluttered world through their art.

This movie is funny, sad, and touching, portraying a dirty and grimy Moscow right on the brink of the Communist collapse, and the raw human pain at the bottom of the barrel. Really touching and special. Lungin's and Russian cinema's best, in my opinion.
