Week in geek's best films of 2011

30 December 2011 5:25 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Drive, Source Code and Thor were among the highlights of a year notable for the increasing quality of fanboy-friendly films

Quite a few critics' best-of lists have implied 2011 was a pretty average year for popcorn movies. Throw in the fact that 2012 is set to deliver The Dark Knight Rises, Prometheus and the first part of The Hobbit, and it doesn't augur well for an annual round-up of the past 12 months' top fanboy-friendly films. But while there has been nothing this year to compare with the head-spinning brio of 2010's Inception or the epic, flawed genius of 2009's Watchmen, the overall quality of fantasy, sci-fi and comic book fare has definitely been on the way up.

That's not to say we haven't had our fair share of distinctly non-festive turkeys. Green Lantern was an almighty mess dogged by a ropey script, dodgy CGI, and wooden chemistry between Ryan Reynolds and just about everyone else on screen. »

God help us if Sylvester Stallone's "Rocky" musical looks (and sounds) anything like this

22 November 2011 12:05 PM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

As a boxer, Rocky Balboa was famous for his tenacity. In the face of impossible odds, the guy just wouldn't quit. Sylvester Stallone, the man who created and portrayed Rocky, is sort of the same way. He retired Rocky once after 1990's "Rocky V" then brought him back sixteen years later for "Rocky Balboa." Now, five years after the latest "last" "Rocky," he's bringing the character back again, this time on the stage.

That's right. Get ready for "Rocky: The Musical."

The Hollywood Reporter reports that Stallone is producing a "Rocky" musical which will premiere in Germany next fall in advance of an English language world tour. If you're wondering whether classic "Rocky" musical moments like "Eye of the Tiger" will be recreated on the stage, the answer, apparently, is yes. From THR's article:

"Broadway veteran Thomas Meehan ('The Producers') will write the script to 'Rocky: The Musical. »

Sly Stallone Set to Produce Broadway Styled Rocky Musical

21 November 2011 | The Daily BLAM! | See recent The Daily BLAM! news »

The Expendables star is prepping to for the return of the character that made him famous: heavy weight boxer Rocky Balboa. But instead of a film sequel, this time around fans of the Italian Stallion will be treated to a singing and dancing spectacle. Rocky is a boxing saga of popular films all written by and starring Sylvester Stallone, who plays the character Rocky Balboa. The films is the series are Rocky (1976) -- which to this day stands as the most critically acclaimed of the franchise, Rocky II (1979), Rocky III (1982), Rocky IV (1985), Rocky V (1990) and newly released Rocky Balboa (2006). In 2009, Stallone gave an interview to the German newsmagazine Tele5 whereupon he mentioned that, although it sounded foolish to some, he feels the need to make another Rocky movie. Now, »

Will Real Steel show us some mettle?

26 August 2011 9:04 AM, PDT | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Director Shawn Levy's 'Rocky v Robot Wars' movie looks technically fabulous – but will it push all the right boys' own buttons? Watch the first round of footage here

We're now almost two-thirds of the way through 2011 and so far it's been, if not exactly a vintage year, a surprisingly decent one for fanboy fare. While there's been little truly thought-provoking (such as 2009's District 9 or last year's Inception), there have been plenty of movies that have pushed all the right boys' own buttons and delivered better value entertainment than anyone might have expected: I'm thinking (in particular) Source Code, Thor, Captain America and Rise of the Planet of the Apes. The first looked like Duncan Jones's foray into director-for-hire territory but turned out to be a pleasingly weird, sinister thriller with a classy Hitchcockian edge, a terrific cast and surprising heart. The next pair did all that »

Check Out a New Featurette for Real Steel

22 August 2011 4:44 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

DreamWorks has released a new featurette for director Shawn Levy's (Date Night) robot-boxing, action/drama Real Steel. Starring Hugh Jackman, Evangeline Lilly, Anthony Mackie, Kevin Durand, Hope Davis, and Dakota Goyo, the film is set in the year 2020 when robot-boxing has inevitably become the most popular sport in the world. The pic centers on Charlie (Jackman) a former boxer who is now attempting to mentor/program a robot to the top of the android-boxing ranks. Essentially, it's Rocky V with robots (and hopefully a climactic back-alley brawl between Jackman and his electronic protege). Check out the new featurette, which assures potential moviegoers that boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard was in fact involved in the making of the film, after the jump and click here to watch the latest trailer. Real Steel opens on October 7th. Here's the featurette: Here's the official synopsis for Real Steel: A gritty, white-knuckle, »

The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly Of Prequels

12 August 2011 1:51 PM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

This summer hasn’t exactly been the strongest for films in recent memory. However earlier X-Men: First Class stood out as a rare infusion of originality into the mainstream and over the last few weeks glowing reviews have been rolling in for Rise of the Planet of the Apes which led us to thinking… have we now hit a positive trend this summer: the franchise prequel?

What makes a prequel work in today’s movie-making environment? The expectation to be different. For today’s writers and directors it means carte blanche (to a degree) to do something new and innovative with a movie franchise whose image has decayed over the years from poor sequels and daft creative decisions. With big name prequels for the Spider-Man and Alien (Yes, Prometheus is a prequel. I don’t care how much Ridley Scott denies it) franchises on their way now it’s a »

Music in the movies: Bill Conti

27 June 2011 7:27 AM, PDT | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

In this week’s Music in the movies, Glen salutes the fine work of Bill Conti, whose work has graced the Rocky and Karate Kid franchises...

Bill Conti’s compositions seemed to dominate the Rocky and The Karate Kid movies, which I watched frequently when I was younger. Conti is a composer that I have long admired, and I’ve been keen to write about him since I started this column. So below is my take on the two franchises that he is most renowned for, as well as a couple of his other excellent scores.

The Rocky series

Conti’s theme for Rocky will no doubt be the one he’s remembered for. A theme so iconic that it is as integral to the series as the presence of Stallone himself. If you were to buy just one score from the series, the one that accompanies the original would be the best purchase, »

Stallone to Shatner: A Five-Timers ClusterFlick Challenge

Today's Challenge: Fast Five opens this weekend and ... well ... everybody knows that part five is always the best movie in any franchise. Celebrate part fives by making the movie connection between Rocky V's Sylvester Stallone and Star Trek V's William Shatner.

Our first Facebook movie game, ClusterFlick, plays off that old "six degrees of separation" theory — you know, the one that has a certain Kevin at the center of the Hollywood universe. It's easy to play, but not so easy to win. The goal is to use the major cast of movies to get from Point A to Point B in the smallest number of moves.

TV Review: Lights Out, 1.1 – “Pilot”

15 January 2011 9:26 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Considering the popularity of sports movies and their feel-good formulas, it’s strange that TV hasn’t been more receptive to them, particularly when it comes to the dramatic potential behind a boxing drama. Rocky is the obvious shadow looming over FX’s new series Lights Out, which won’t escape being compared to Sylvester Stallone’s six-part saga, particularly as this show’s premise borrows plot-points from Rocky V and Rocky Balboa. But it brings enough fresh elements to feel like a separate entity, not entirely indebted to the Italian Stallion’s big-screen triumphs.

It helps that the pilot of Lights Out is fairly predictable, as it catches you unawares whenever it takes a detour, while being easy to understand the storyline and intention of the show from the get-go. Patrick “Lights” Leary (Holt McCallany) was heavyweight champ for nine months, before losing his title in a bout against »

The movie characters who were supposed to die (but got saved by a rewrite)

11 January 2011 9:49 AM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

They were one rewrite away from a date with the grim reaper. We look back at the movie characters who were never supposed to make the end credits…

Warning: lots of spoilers ahead. We've labelled the name of the film we're talking about in the sub-headers, rather than the characters themselves, to help you avoid stumbling upon something you didn't want to know...

Lethal Weapon 2

It's a film that's cropped up a few times in recent weeks on the site, but perhaps the most interesting thing about Lethal Weapon 2 was that it was supposed to mark the end of Mel Gibson's Riggs character. As it stood, it instead marked the moment where Riggs went from a man on the edge to part of a comedy double act.

However, the original plan, when Riggs is shot in the film, was that he'd die. That was what writer Shane Black had intended to happen, »
